Gavin Bryars
Modern British composer Gavin Bryars was best known for a series of post-minimalist works composed and recorded in the 1960s and '70s, most notably "The Sinking of the Titanic" (1969) and "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet" (1971). The latter, a long-form piece built upon a loop of an unknown homeless person singing an old Anglican hymn that Bryars had recorded on the streets of London while working on the sound crew of a documentary about homelessness, was released in 1975 on Brian Eno's Obscure label and became many rock fans' entry point into Bryars' music. In addition to his own compositions, which include the operas Medea (1984), Doctor Ox's Experiment (1998) and G (2002), Bryars scored several films, including the surrealistic Italian horror film "Necropolis" (1970). These include three features by his wife, Russian writer/director Anna Chernakova: "Season of Mists" (2009), "Smert v Pensne ili nash Chekhov" (2010) and "Dog's Paradise" (2013).
