Critics Consensus

Remixing Roger Corman's B-movie by way of the Off-Broadway musical, Little Shop of Horrors offers camp, horror and catchy tunes in equal measure -- plus some inspired cameos by the likes of Steve Martin and Bill Murray.

Pauline Kael New Yorker Little Shop of Horrors is jivey, senseless fun. The stupidity is appealing, the way it is in great comic strips. Sep 13, 2023 Full Review Walter Goodman New York Times Levi Stubbs's big voice explodes from the insatiable plant, and there's a knockout turn by Steve Martin and Bill Murray as a sadistic dentist and his masochistic patient. Jan 9, 2018 Full Review Empire Magazine Some of the slower tunes tend to grind but the sort of musical/ retro irony is still amusing in places. Not if you don't like dentists though. Rated: 2/5 May 25, 2011 Full Review Kristy Strouse Wonderfully Weird and Horrifying With a hearty dose of camp and a campy bit of heart, there’s enough horror to satisfy genre fans and catchy tunes to sing you through the night. Dec 9, 2023 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies If you've only seen the original theatrical cut of the horror comedy musical, it's worth watching Little Shop of Horrors: The Director's Cut! Rated: 5/5 Sep 18, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review One of the more delightful aspects of Little Shop of Horrors is how well it blends tragic characters and bloody murder with a genuine, heartfelt romance - an unlikely balance. Janice C "The Little Shop of Horrors" is a delightful blend of comedy and horror that captivates audiences with its quirky charm. The story follows Seymour, a timid florist who discovers a mysterious plant that thrives on human flesh. As the plant grows, so do Seymour's ambitions, leading to a series of hilarious and horrifying events. The film is known for its catchy musical numbers, with songs that are both fun and memorable. The character of Audrey II, the man-eating plant, steals the show with its larger-than-life personality and impressive puppetry. The humor is clever, balancing the darker themes with lighthearted moments that keep viewers engaged. Overall, "The Little Shop of Horrors" is a cult classic that combines a unique premise with entertaining performances and catchy music. It's a must-watch for fans of both horror and comedy genres! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/22/24 Full Review ron m Totally amusing and great fun to watch! What's not to like? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review Luis G When people ask me what is my favorite movie ever, I always answered with Little Shop Of Horrors. I love everything about this movie, from the cast, to the music, to the excellent effects of Audrey II. It's hard to believe such effort was put into the amazing puppeteer work with no CGI. The best parts were with Steve Martin and Mean Green Mother. If you have a chance, also check out the Director's Cut with the alternate ending. Also whatever you do "Don't feed the plant" Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Julian S Featuring a clever comic-book style and sharp wit, this musical version is a significant upgrade from the original film, with original Broadway star Ellen Greene's soaring voice leading the way. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Dani G Very theatrical, very rock opera style. Simple, but well done. Maybe the best thing from this film are the little participations (or almost cameos?) from Steve Martin and Bill Murray Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Read all reviews
