Tyler G Clooney is going to always offer a certain "slickness", but this is an awkward, poorly-written romantic thriller. The dialogue is downright cringey at times. Very overrated. But it's filled with enough talent to make it pretty impossible to dislike. Not when I was a teen and not almost 30 years later. One thing I do notice now and didn't then however, is how much better it could have been with main stars who aren't so impenetra bly charismatic and better at character acting. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the film follows Jack Foley, a charming bank robber played by George Clooney, who escapes from prison and ends up kidnapping U.S. Marshal Karen Sisco, portrayed by Jennifer Lopez. The chemistry between Clooney and Lopez is palpable, making their cat-and-mouse dynamic both engaging and entertaining. The movie masterfully blends elements of crime, romance, and comedy, creating a unique and captivating narrative. The sharp dialogue and witty interactions keep the story lively, while the non-linear storytelling adds depth without causing confusion. Soderbergh's direction brings a stylish flair to the film, complemented by a cool, jazzy soundtrack that enhances the overall vibe. Supporting performances by Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, and Steve Zahn add richness to the ensemble, each bringing their own flavor to the story. Really cute set-up - Clooney and J-Lo locked in the trunk of a car together, him a crook, her a marshall, and even here Clooney makes her melt. Given, Clooney is always effortless, with a smile to charm the pants off anyone, both sexes. But he's far too handsome and smart to play such a loser conman (except in O, Brother, in which his character is so perfectly comic strip-silly that it works). And J-Lo has too velvety a voice to play a ballsy US Marshall. Their chemistry works OK, but their ultimate rendezvous is yawn-inspiring - and that's meant to be the core of the whole story. Along with that, we get dozens of quasi-interesting characters in sub-plots that lead nowhere, except to leave you wishing for a less flabby script.
