B-movie horror star Bruce Campbell (himself) spends most of his time wisecracking with his agent (Ted Raimi), drunk dialing his ex-wife (Ellen Sandweiss) or dealing with the occasional singing prostitute (Janelle Farber). But then he's kidnapped by teenage fans in Oregon who think "Evil Dead" hero Campbell can help fight off a real-life monster. Campbell finds himself battling a dragon and trying to make a good impression on a teen's pretty mother, not necessarily in that order.

My Name Is Bruce succeeds or fails based entirely upon the viewer's opinion of Bruce Campbell, an unreasonable burden for even the most accomplished actor.

Tom Ambrose Empire Magazine Doesn't really cut it as a horror or a comedy despite Campbell's undeniable charm. Rated: 2/5 Feb 12, 2009 Full Review Stephen Garrett Time Out Add two stars-or even three-if you're as passionate about cheesy B-actor Campbell as he is about himself. Rated: 1/5 Feb 12, 2009 Full Review Mark Olsen Los Angeles Times Perhaps the best thing that can be said about My Name Is Bruce is that Bruce Campbell has in fact appeared in worse movies. Rated: 2/5 Dec 19, 2008 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The movie fits into that so-bad-it’s-good category of Campbell’s career, which, by his direction of this project, tells me he’s realistic enough to admit that he loves the class of films he presides over. That's part of his charm. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 7, 2024 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed Smug, silly, and forgettable, this vanity project wants to be the next cult hit but really is just another vehicle for Bruce Campbell... Dinos K He's the thief-guy from Xena? Auto-something? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review Gaming U Bruce Campbell is the only reason you should watch this movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/04/23 Full Review Gus T The story was decent and bruce Campbell was great as always but the camerawork was only ok and the lighting was pretty bad but over all it was an entertaining cheesey b-movie and I'd recommend it to anyone who is a big fan of bruce Campbell or just cheesey b-movies Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/23 Full Review Miodrag S I will say only this - Hail to the King, baby! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/24/23 Full Review Audience Member It brings me no joy whatsoever to say that I did not like this movie, but it's completely true - It's a feature-length extension of a single-joke premise that was already the basis for the movie Galaxy Quest. Literally, this is Galaxy Quest but for Evil Dead, but not nearly as varied. While Galaxy Quest wasn't quite perfect, it did feature a nuanced villain, some genuine dramatic reveals involving the naïve denizens, and the way the heroes won the day was a genuinely creative plot-turn; My Name Is Bruce follows the same beats but the villain is literally just a stand-in, they defeat him via some silly contrivance, and the "It was never real before" reveal here is played purely for laughs, and it's a joke that the movie literally set its entire runtime setting up, so it's not a joke that catches you off-guard. And also, there's like 10 minutes of screen-time dedicated to two guys singing a song about the villain; not all at once, but they cut to them singing the same song for 2-3 minutes, and they do this like four times! Now, one thing I will strongly give is that this movie has Bruce Campbell playing himself, literally, and we see a comic exaggeration of his life, everything from receiving only Z-Movie scripts to act in, to him being such a wash-out that he's literally drinking whiskey from his dog's water bowl with such frequency that his own ex-wife says, in a phone-call: "You've been drinking from the dog's bowl again, haven't you?" These moments of the life of Bruce are genuinely funny from time to time, and honestly they're what make the movie at all worth watching. What's sad is that this movie tried to make itself interesting by jumping on the Meta Narrative bandwagon, but they actually did a better job of this trope self-awareness in Season 3 of Ash vs The Evil Dead, making this an instance where the central joke in a parody was actually less funny than when the official thing it's parodying actually dips its toes into the same theme. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review greg r If you're a Bruce Campbell fan, you'll love this. Is gory, silly, and hilarious. You don't have to be a Bruce fan to enjoy this, but I think you'll get more of the jokes if you've seen 5-6 of his other movies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
