Audience Member Enjoyable and typically well produced Shaw Brothers swordplay martial arts film about two warring clans. I prefer my marital arts film to have more hand-to-hand fighting and less swordplay, so I was disappointed on that front, but I did enjoy seeing a young Eric Tsang and a young Bolo Yeung with ridiculous eyebrows. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Many distinct characters make this hard to keep track of them all. Though the basic plot line is simple. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member The 14 Amazons is an epic in every sense of the word. When their patriarch is killed in an ambush, and corrupt ministers make peace with the enemy, the widows of the Yang clan decide to seek revenge. Outnumbered, outmatched, but not outdone, these lethal warriors must face all sorts of odds against a powerful enemy. Full of strategies and cat and mouse, this movie has enough to make Sun Tzu's mouth water. The final battle in the castle is extremely well filmed, for an explosive and gory action adventure movie. My only complaint is that the action is rather messy, as its more large scale battles than one on one battles. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Fantastic Shaw Brothers epic that features an interesting score, a tremendous nearly all-female cast, and some terrific stunt work. I thoroughly enjoyed this bad ass Chinese revenge flick. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member "As the saying goes, 'A tiger may be old, but it never gives up it's ambition.'" The 14 women of a family seek revenge for their treacherously murdered husband/father/brother/son/nephew/grandson in this old-school martial arts flick. Their forces are outnumbered and their enemy is vicious, but the women of The 14 Amazons (great title, by the way) are totally bent on vengeance and protecting their country from the bloodthirsty ruler of West Hsia and his 5 sons. Watch it for the impressive large scale battles and several really cool scenes (human pyramid/bridge FTW!) Who doesn't like to see a bunch of women being crafty, heroic bad***es? The camera work during the battles is great, and the movie as a whole is surprisingly gory, violent, and occasionally hilarious, too. Even the frequently used miniature sets and models are very well done (though they are understandably noticeable to today's viewer). A great job is done making several members of the large cast memorable (my personal favorite is Yang Pa Mei). Plus, the enemy soldiers all wear uniforms that make them look like Santa Claus, which is just pure bonus win. Any Shaw Brothers fans will have a grand ole time with this one. It's one of my favorites that I've seen. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Good lord... well, I was shocked to see how many of the title characters survived. It seemed like only 2 or 3 did -- this is one of the most violent films of the Shaw era I've seen, with a massive body count and the most willing acts of self-sacrifice I've seen in one movie. The actresses were good as far as the action went, but there were so many of them that I could really only identify with 3 of them as standouts. Lo Lieh was a great villain, glad to see him here. Biggest problem with the film though was the youngest of the four generations of family members fighting together. This was clearly a young woman, but playing a male, the last surviving male member of the Yang family apparently. But they made no effort to disguise her as a male. She dressed just like the other female warriors. The absolute only indication was that the other characters said words like "he" or "boy" so often. Couldn't stand that part. And OMG that friggin' human bridge! Insane! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
