Dave S Truthfully, you're unlikely to find a biopic more interesting than Jane Campion's An Angel at My Table, the story of New Zealand poet and novelist Janet Frame. Using three different actresses in the lead role, the film follows the troubled but wildly talented writer from her early years as a schoolgirl to her years spent in a psychiatric hospital to her ultimate success as a writer. Despite clocking in at over 150 minutes, the film never grows stale, thanks in part to Campion's ability to keep the character interesting and fresh (not all that hard, considering the character) and in part to the performances of the three lead actors. It is tragic, inspiring, and insightful, all in equal parts, and could be Campion's finest movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/06/23 Full Review Audience Member It gave me catharsis. Best work of art that I have ever seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member A biographical account of the life of Janet Frame (Kerry Fox/Alexia Keogh/Karen Fergusson), a sweet-natured but painfully shy and insecure red-headed woman who battles schizophrenia, but goes on to become an acclaimed novelist. Was the first New Zealand film to screen in competition at the Venice Film Festival. Many international festival awards. Filmed in Auckland, Helensville, Kariotahi and Cook Strait among various NZ locations. Definitely recommended. - nzvideos.org Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Adapted from three autobiographical books by New Zealand author Janet Frame, Campion's three part film, originally made for television, tells the story of Frame's childhood in rural New Zealand, and her eventual 8 year incarceration in a mental hospital after she is misdiagnosed as a schizophrenic. Painfully shy and slightly depressed, doctors decide to treat her with shock treatments, over 200 of them, and are planning a lobotomy, until she wins a national literary prize for her first book of short stories. She is freed, and gains a literary grant to travel to Europe where she eventually gains some peace and success. I'm not normally much of a fan of Campion's work, but I love this film. It tells the story in a fairly straightforward manner, never resorting to soap opera melodrama. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Great Bio-epic, very well made. The direction and pacing is great and the performance by the main character is amazing. While it is a bit slow for my taste but still the authors journey and the experience she goes through made the movie worthwhile. Loved the way how they show her growing up and the likeness among the young, teenage and the adult Janet Frame is done up beautifully. Another thing i loved about the movie was the excellent music score. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Fantastic... A Great true Life Story, amazingly casted, superbly acted and Splendid Cinematography! I am in awe of writer, director, Jane Campion, her vision has completely captivated me in Sweetie, The Piano & now in Angel at my Table. Her style & ability to take unusual life circumstances and turn them into amazingly courageous poetic journeys... is mind blowing! Kerry Fox as Janet Frame was brilliant... Janet Frame (autobiography) grows up in a poor family with lots of brothers and sisters. Already at an early age she is different from the other kids. She gets an education as a teacher but since she is considered abnormal she's locked up in a mental institution for eight years. Success comes when she begins to write books. A must see!
