A combined British and American paratrooper force, led by American general Gavin and British general Urquhart (Sean Connery), plans to take a highway leading from the Netherlands into Germany, so that British ground troops led by Lieutenant General Horrocks (Edward Fox) and Lieutenant Colonel Vandeleur (Michael Caine) can enter enemy territory. Critics Consensus

A Bridge Too Far is a war movie too long, although top-notch talent on both sides of the camera keeps the end result consistently watchable.

Will Jones Minneapolis Star Tribune The movie itself crumples from an excess of success, since by the time all the stars and rumbling war toys have justified their places in the budget, A Bridge Too Far has become an hour too long. Oct 26, 2021 Full Review Christy Lemire ChristyLemire.com It would seem impossible to go wrong with such an incredible, all-star cast - which makes A Bridge Too Far such a frustrating misfire (no pun intended). Rated: 2/4 Jul 2, 2018 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The movie's big and expensive and filled with stars, but it's not an epic. It's the longest B-grade war movie ever made. Rated: 2/4 Jul 2, 2018 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) It's an impressive experience, stunning, but in the end profoundly depressive. Hughe J A Bridge Too Far is the last of the big budget war movies that had thousands of extras, hundreds of vehicles, airplanes, and boats, and was shot on the various locations where the real battles took place throughout Europe in WWII. This is the story of Operation Market Garden where in 1944 English General Montgomery proposed a daring attack by the allies deep into German held territory in the Netherlands opening an invasion route into northern Germany. The plan involved American, British, and Polish airborne troops landing behind German lines in order to capture bridges and they would be relieved by a British armored column moving along a single highway. The plan ultimately failed and this movie details all of the different officers and missions involved in that plan. This is a true ensemble cast as the movie stars Sean Connery, Michael Caine, James Caan, Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Ryan O'Neil, Lawrence Olivier, Anthony Hopkins and so many more with Richard Attenborough directing. Other than Hackman's terrible Polish accent the acting across the board was excellent, especially Hopkins and Connery, the set pieces were incredible, the attention to detail was stunning, and the recreation of the battles without the use of any CGI was fantastic. The movie was three hours long but with so many stories to tell it's understandable. Overall this is one of my favorite war movies and certainly worth a watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review Gabe H Great war movie. Honestly I don't know why this got such mediocre reviews. It is long, yes, but no less exciting, excellently acted, monumental in scope and, to pull that all off in 1977 must have been a challenge. There are some scenes which carry weight to this day. Unusual for a big budget blockbuster war movie to have more emotion than many at the time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/25 Full Review rex w An underrated gem, with great action and suspense. They probably could have trimmed about 15 minutes. Redford, James Caan, and Sean Connery highlighted the all-star cast. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/04/25 Full Review Joe H This is one of the great war movies. My only beef is that the subtitles for the German dialog were removed.
