Chris Rock: Selective Outrage

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Chris Rock holds nothing back when dishing on the infamous slap heard around the world, but his "Selective Outrage" is mostly an undercooked routine full of jokes that skew more stale than relevant.

Audience Says

Chris Rock spends too much of this special putting his spin on hot topics in comedy instead of finding something new to talk about, but he still has great delivery and definitely claps back on “the slap.”

Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) He’s treading water at times, but the invariable finale where he reflects on being slapped by Will Smith live onstage at the Academy Awards is stinging: a settling of a score somehow both righteous and vituperative. Mar 16, 2023 Full Review Lauren Michele Jackson The New Yorker None of the jokes will rise to the level of iconic, or even memorable, I’m afraid. Yet Rock reminds us of his icon status simply by opening his mouth. His delivery works when nothing else does—and, in Selective Outrage, little did. Mar 10, 2023 Full Review Izzy Ampil BuzzFeed News Rock’s personal grievance with Smith is legitimate, but by trying to mash it into the shape of a cultural cautionary tale, he does himself and his comedy a disservice. Mar 8, 2023 Full Review Jeanine T. Abraham VisAbleBlackwoman (Medium) “misogynoir can come even from those who are Black, who were raised by Black women and profess to value Black people.” In this show in particular, Chris Rock is the poster-boy for misogynoir. Rated: 0 Jul 22, 2023 Full Review James Delingpole The Spectator I personally don’t begrudge Rock the gazillions he earns from this shtick. But as with fellow masters of the art you cannot help but think: what a gloriously easy way to earn a living! Mar 16, 2023 Full Review Ben Schwartz The Nation Both more and less than comedy, funny but also the occasion for a lot of clapter from Rock’s fans. Rock delivered on all the expectations swirling through social media over the past year, but it’s also OK if we never hear about that slap again. Mar 16, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Michael C He has become a uncle tom. Kissing the man's ass every chance he gets That is from a white man. Chris, fuck you and the damage you have done. Enjoy the money, for pissing on your ancestors graves. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Petros T "Selective Outrage" isn't without some strong comedic moments - you know, the ones where the artist makes an unexpected and on-point connection that tickles your brain. Unfortunately though, those moments aren't the ones prevailing here, for this is an arguably overlong special comprised mostly of far from challenging material, long gaps between punchlines, an insistence on verbatim repetition of phrases and a frantic energy that's limited to the delivery but is absent from the jokes themselves. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Kandy A This is not a funny man. He's an angry man. A very opinionated angry man who is not worth listening to. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/23 Full Review matthias s Take a drink everytime Chris shouts the N-word, trust me this special will get better by the second. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/09/23 Full Review Sensory T Stale and hacky. Chris Rock lacked energy, self-awareness and overall.. talent. An utterly lacklustre performance, rife with misogyny and selective outrage. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/08/23 Full Review Doug J Chris Rock appears to be struggling to achieve the leading edge, insightful, hilarious comedy that he'd authored in the past. Hope it's just a temporary slump. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
