What to Know

Critics Consensus

Its leisurely, businesslike pace won't win the franchise many new fans, but Voyage of the Dawn Treader restores some of the Narnia franchise's lost luster with strong performances and impressive special effects.

Oliver C. If The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was a magical invitation to another world, then The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the travel brochure that should’ve gone straight into the recycling bin. This film is a baffling mess—a soulless, CGI-cluttered slog across a sea of missed opportunities. The plot, already thin in the book, is stretched to breaking point here. Instead of episodic wonder, we get a collection of uninspired side quests strung together with the emotional depth of a wet napkin. Each new island feels like a half-finished level in a budget video game, complete with stiff exposition and zero stakes. The new characters are either irritating (cough Eustace) or instantly forgettable. Even Aslan, once a commanding presence, is now reduced to dropping cryptic one-liners like a disinterested life coach. The titular Dawn Treader looks beautiful, but it’s like watching a grand ship with no compass—it drifts, it meanders, and it eventually sinks under the weight of its own dullness. Worst of all, the wonder and mythic weight that made Narnia special are gone. This isn’t a magical journey—it’s a checklist of fantasy clichés, wrapped in lazy moralizing and bland performances. It’s the cinematic equivalent of staring at a snow globe that never gets shaken. By the time the credits rolled, I didn’t feel like I’d been on an epic adventure. I felt like I’d been stuck in a boat with people I didn’t like, waiting for something interesting to happen. Spoiler: it never did. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/09/25 Full Review Charleigh Q First I'd like to say that I don't watch many movies at all. By that I mean I've watched fewer than 20 in my lifetime and I'm in my 40's. I've always been fascinated however with stories of fantasy, dragons, mythical creatures and so on. I have watched The Chronicles of Narnia The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and it was very good. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/02/25 Full Review Elisabeth E I love this movie, although it is not my favorite in the franchise. This movie has its fair share of comedic relief, the visuals were a bit poor, but still perfect. I enjoyed the expansion on Edmund and Lucy’s sibling relationship. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/25 Full Review James E A slight decrease in quality from the last two, but still a lot of fun, with a good enough end to the series. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/27/25 Full Review Micboy y I watched this multiple times throughout my childhood, and have continued watching it as an adult. It's not the Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, but the sense of fantasy and pure wonder it instilled within me as a child has remained untouched as the years have gone on. There is no better ending for Reepicheep than the land of Aslan. There is no greater arc for Eustace than seeing the monster he was and overcoming it (with some help). Edmund finally gets his own life without the shadow of Peter, and Lucy gets to realize that she can love who she is and not see who she thinks she should be. Despite what others have said, I still believe the CG in this movie is phenomenal and is used with far more class than many other movies today. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review The Wandering D Another good Narnia movie. I love this movie, but it isn't as good as the other two films in the franchise.
