      Clash of the Titans

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

A goofy, old-school sword-and-sandal epic, Clash of the Titans mines Greek mythology for its story and fleshes it out with Ray Harryhausen's charmingly archaic stop-motion animation techniques.

He-Rex One of the great fantasy adventure films of the '80's. So much fun! My favorite of Ray Harryhausen's work Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Ryan N I loved this movie ever since I was a kid. I didn't see it in the theaters but my dad rented it. I have seen it many times and it never gets old. The special effects were cool to me for the stop-motion process. My favorite character since then and still is Bubo the Owl! The Kraken destruction scenes were the best part of the movie. The blind witches creeped me out when I was a kid and still do. Medusa scenes did as well. I loved the story and the Greek mythology. It is what made me love history (ancient history) when I was in school. If you love action stop-motion and action from the past, this movie will please you. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review David W A spiritual successor to the all time great adventure fantasy movies such as the classic Sinbad Trilogy (Seventh, Golden and Eye) and Jason and the Argonauts. It even boasts Ray Harryhausen stop motion special effects (some of his finest work). A classic Greek Epic story, beautifully retold and with a great lead star in Hamlin. There are bags of memorable scenes and to date it still remains the last of the great classic action fantasies in my opinion. There's something about these sword and sandal classics that they simply just don't get right these days. Maybe it's simply the feel of these older movies but for me the new CGI laden movies of the genre just don't capture the same wide eyed innocence that they used to. Anyway, I love this, it's a classic that stands proudly with best in the genre. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/07/23 Full Review Marvin H I rewatched after many years and I must say I enjoyed it thoroughly. The special effects aged horrible a few times but mostly the effects held up well. Harry Hamlin is an 80's sex God. Olivier is hysterically over the top. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/18/23 Full Review Julie O I like this movie, remember watching it as a kid and bought the DVD to watch it again. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Over 40 years later and it’s a very decent adaptation of Greek storytelling Director Desmond Davis tells the adventures of Perseus; he grows up on a deserted island engaged to be married to Princess Andromeda who’s destined to rule Joppa But there’s the challenge of Calibos, a satyr that steals her soul every night preventing that Perseus must trek to Joppa and face other creatures to save her This feels like a throwback to the Ray Harryhausen stop motion flicks of the 50s It actually made its budget back and was one of the highest grossing films of 1981 It's a silly swords and sandals epic yes but decent adaptation of Greek mythology Bubo the mechanical owl is one of my favorite things in it This was also Ray Harryhausens last film he worked on The fact that they used real ancient ruins in Italy did make the movie feel authentic For many it also introduced people to Greek myths Some things are dated but it remains a good picture covering rich mythology Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Derek Malcolm Guardian Children of all ages will come out happy enough, I would imagine. Dingy colour, a pretty rotten script and the two-hour length were my main complaints. But it was fun while three-quarters of it lasted. Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader Apart from some fine slimy creeps in the Medusa episode, it's bland and toothy, with a narrative that gets bogged down in short-term action. Aug 17, 2020 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews Mostly the problem is Beverley Cross' screenplay, which is unacceptably, irredeemably bad. Rated: 2/4 Apr 30, 2009 Full Review JoAnn Rhetts Charlotte Observer Clash of the Titans is more fun than a '50s fur, forbidden fruit and fin flick has any right to be... Harryhausen's stop-action menagerie is unflaggingly engaging. May 3, 2023 Full Review Phil Edwards Starburst For me, Clash of the Titans fails as a film because its dramatic structure is so unsound. Jul 27, 2022 Full Review Philip French Observer (UK) Earthbound, remote, banal, insecure, its actors as stiff as the monsters the special effects man, Ray Harryhausen, has created for them to fight.
