For Diane, everyone else comes first. Generous but with little patience for self-pity, she spends her days checking in on sick friends, volunteering at her local soup kitchen, and trying valiantly to save her troubled, drug-addicted adult son from himself. But beneath her relentless routine of self-sacrifice, Diane is fighting a desperate internal battle, haunted by past mistakes which threaten to tear her increasingly chaotic world apart.

A small-scale drama rich with meaning, Diane offers audiences an uncommonly empathetic and wise look at life -- and stellar work from Mary Kay Place in the title role.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader For decades Kent Jones has been one of the most eloquent and perceptive film critics in the U.S.; with this devastating chamber drama... he also proves himself to be a keen observer of psychology and American social mores. Alec B At first the movie plays out like your typical indie character study but gradually it goes deeper. Mary Kay Place is great, finally getting a role worthy of her talents. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review dolores c A sad but beautiful movie! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review wayne m Diane is a beautifully observed small film. A meticulous and authentic film that is very small in scale but large in truth. Set in a small town in Massachusetts the film follows Diane, a woman who is central to her community. She spends a lot of her time visiting her cancer ridden cousin in hospital and also her drug addcited son. She spends her other time caring and listening and visting friends. This superb film is small on action but big on conversationsa and human interactions. It shows quietly how rgret can transform a life and how family bonds can sometimes be broken. It can be sad at times, but there is some degree of hope. Mary Kay Place is superb in the lead role. She ads plenty of empathy to a rich and rewarding film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Diane was slow. The acting was excellent, but It was a depressing film. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review vander a Excellent character study - Mary Kay Place is phenomenal and she's in every scene in the movie - Great script, well acted portrayal of everyday life. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Why does it seem that a good character piece almost never comes with a tight story line? I'm getting tired of movies that are "a slice of life" and nothing else. Tell me a story, dammit! Also, if you like the word "Goddamn" you are going to love this film. I'm thinking that the Goddamn drinking game would be appropriate. Very lazy script-writing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
