Audience Member This movie is very European, there are some funny parts, and some parts I feel like should have been tangents. But the characterization was pretty good. It's worth a watch. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Kudos to The Hairdresser for depicting the hardships of a plus size woman both physically and socially, without being preachy and/or offensive. Kathi is just a woman doing what she has to to get by. She is a well-rounded character (pun intended) who is both likable and flawed. The best part of the movie is that it doesn't rely on manipulative sentimentality which is so often the case in a film like this. I highly recommend this one. It's listed as a comedy, but it's more of a drama or a dramedy, perhaps. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member What a raw performance from the main actress! Gabriela Maria Schmeide delivered a VERY natural and likable character based on her life's little potholes due to her "socially unaccepted looks" in east Berlin. Beautiful piece from the German filmmaker Doris DÃÃ,Ã,Ã,¶rrie who considers this a comedy but for the international crowd can be more a drama. Her shots will never be forgotten. My respects go to both of them! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member 3/5 --- A light-hearted movie about a heavy-set woman overcoming life and others things that get your way of becoming who you are :) Some really touching scenes about how we sometimes treat each other based on looks, how we react and how we see ourselves, and seeking out our dream thru financial hardships, etc. I like how honest it was in portraying people, the good and bad. Quite funny too, story ended differently than I would've guessed - more realistic :P but still recommended. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Liked it until I read the thick round butt and huge rack was of a body double. The main chick was wearing a fat suit. Sad. But ok movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review jesse o While this movie is certainly formulaic and it drags in the middle, when the subplot of Kathi taking in Vietnamese immigrants in order to get the down payment so she can work on her beauty shop, this movie is still really good and it benefits from an incredibly charming performance from Gabriela Maria Schmeide. This woman is so likable that it's really hard not to root for her in her fight against the beauty shop that discriminated against her because of her weight. In a way, there's also some social commentary seeing how one woman tries to go against a bigger business than hers and the struggles she faces in trying to get it off the ground. If there is a problem is that it does start to drag once the Vietnamese immigrants come into play and it sort of dilute the original issue. The movie never stops being good, but it does loses its focus for a bit before getting it back by the climax. The movie also deals with serious issues about weight and how it affects Kathi's health and at first I thought it would've been forced in, but it feels completely natural in the context of the story. And I don't really have much else to say, it is a light and energetic film with an incredibly likable performance from Gabriela. It won't require much brainpower to get through this film, but it is very entertaining nonetheless. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
