Despite largely effective English dialogue that allows key characters to acquire dimension, the plot is hard to follow, especially early on. Yet the film pulls you in as it explores Shinji's perplexing dilemma and his maturing. Go to Full Review

Just another giant robot movie. Go to Full Review

This is mighty perplexing nerd kibble, its highfalutin' philosophical and psychological banter way too outlandish to seriously engage. Yet as a visceral experience, it's entrancing. Go to Full Review
Chase Burns The Stranger (Seattle, WA) 12/09/2021
It obviously moves at a much quicker pace than the anime, for better and for worse, but the final battle between a giant floating crystal pyramid and a sexy purple mecha with a supergun is enough to hook even the anime-phobic. Go to Full Review

While [it's] absolutely promising as the first movie in a series, it signs far too many IOUs to pretend that it's a great stand-alone movie in and of itself. Go to Full Review

kish b Nov 17 ★★★★★ Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone is the perfect re-entry point into the nightmare: a film that feels both comfortingly familiar and quietly, unsettlingly different. At first glance it looks like a faithful, gorgeously remastered retelling of episodes 1–6, and in many ways it is. The animation has been completely redrawn with a level of polish and detail that still looks jaw-dropping today: the Tokyo-3 cityscapes, the Entry Plug sequences, the Angel battles, everything gleams. The new 5.1 sound mix makes Sachiel’s footsteps feel like earthquakes in your chest, and the updated soundtrack choices are flawless. But look closer. There are subtle, deliberate changes everywhere: new shots, altered dialogue, tiny character moments that weren’t in the original. Gendo is colder, Misato is warmer, Shinji’s loneliness feels even more suffocating. The final new scene on the blood-red beach with Rei is chillingly beautiful and plants seeds that will explode years later. 1.11 works brilliantly on every level: as a stunning introduction for newcomers, as a love letter to longtime fans, and as the calm before the Rebuild storm that’s about to tear the entire franchise apart. It’s comfort food laced with poison, and you can feel the shift coming. Gorgeous, haunting, and deceptively gentle. The best possible way to begin the journey all over again. 10/10. Welcome back to Evangelion. You never really left. See more Thomas H Sep 29 Evangelion 1.11 is not a bad film it dosent really adds anything like the later rebuilds do but at least its a cool reanimation of the original 6 episodes and its a part of the rebuilds so dont skip it See more THE NASHVILLE I @Nshvlleindie May 10 Evangelion is fine. Unfortunately it’s 95% action and 5% story. There is stunningly NO origin story and very little background for this fantasy version of earth. See more O&R m Apr 2 It’s only really an improved and more accessible remake of the first few episodes of the original series, but the animation is soooo improved and cleaner, and exceptionally so. And it was also nice watching something related to Evangelion again. See more OverRex E Feb 8 Peak rebuild, I like the changes alot. See more Ryan W @RuiguangW 10/12/2024 Almost a 1-to-1 remake, nothing exciting. The ending fight looked cool, I suppose. See more Read all reviews
