Mark Jenkins Washington Post Making history may require only bravado, but making historical movies demands subtlety as well. Rated: 1.5/4 Apr 27, 2012 Full Review Sheri Linden Los Angeles Times The movie, a hit on its home turf of Turkey, is a straight-up shot of martyrdom and extravagance, honor and glory. Rated: 3/5 Apr 26, 2012 Full Review Yasmin Shehab Cairo360 This film's so bad, it's a pretty great 'what not to do' in filmmaking. Rated: 1/5 Sep 28, 2017 Full Review Emine Yildirim Today's Zaman (Turkey) Conquest 1453 is a muddled pool of hypocrisy. While it feeds on the common paranoia of seeing the West as an unwelcoming and disreputable crowd, it reinforces our collective consciousness' aspirations for superiority in two very contradictory ways Feb 29, 2016 Full Review Maitland McDonagh Film Journal International If you see only one Turkish epic about the siege of Constantinople this year, it should be Fetih 1453. Fetih has intrigue, dancing girls, hunky men, and a spunky heroine. Apr 6, 2012 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member 1453 is quite an interesting spectacle given it's comparatively small budget by international standards. However, it should only be seen as a purely Turkish movie for local consumption. The historical facts are glossed over - the Byzantines are depicted as living in luxurious surroundings whereas the reality is they were completely broke, internationally friendless and the City was only a shell of its former glory. The movie shows no perspective at all from the opposing point of view which is fair enough as the Ottomans did win - but it was hardly an even contest. Finally, the last scene where Mehmet II enters the Hagia Sophia and displays compassion to the terrified civilians is at odds with the truth. There are well documented accounts that anybody of any importance was slaughtered and the rest were sent off to slavery. The Byzantines were certainly not angels in regards to their previous behaviour but 1453 is just a nationalistic bit of propaganda. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Worst movie in the history! Some groups of Turkish barbarian can be the heroes? Such thing can happen only in the movie not in reality! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Pure propaganda. There are so many historical inaccuracies in this movie, it's unbelievable. The movie tries too hard to portray Mehmed II as a good guy, but if you read any book about the topic, you will see the complete opposite of what the movie portrays. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is nothing more than Turkish propaganda. Make Constantinople great again! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Greg P Good pace with lots of interesting history. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/30/17 Full Review Audience Member No more than turkish propaganda about the conquest of the city. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
