Davenport's diary film effectively mines the issues when facing such monumental decisions for the first hour. Then comes the baby, and the film loses direction. Davenport stops being a filmmaker and becomes a parent. Go to Full Review
Alan Scherstuhl Village Voice 08/14/2013
First Comes Love is, before anything else, a portrait of a longing so deep that even the commandingly articulate Davenport struggles to put it into words. Go to Full Review

Davenport makes desultory attempts to bring in other mothers, but she is not an interviewer adept at drawing out scintillating observations. Go to Full Review

Just when you want to shriek at Davenport for her self-absorption, she surprises you with a perception of family life that's as moving as it is true. Go to Full Review

There are some fascinating insights, particularly as her infant son makes her re-examine her childhood...but "First Comes Love" also suffers from being self-obsessed. Go to Full Review

01/22/2022 The story of a wealthy, trust-fund, white woman that pretends to struggle with being a single mother. She conveniently leaves out facts about her wealth and that this documentary is nothing more than a story of wealthy children rebelling against their wealthy parents. Nobody cares, because the real struggle of being an expectant single parent and then a single parent is in the poor community. Hard to be interested in a movie about a person (Nina, the main character) that doesn't understand the struggles of 99% of Americans and thinks her radical decision to have a child is something worth doumenting. See more 07/14/2017 Beautiful and touching. Would love to see more films of her!! See more 01/05/2016 Davenport tells her story....from a storytellers perspective. The lost art of reliving life and putting the pieces together interestingly enough while still not straying too far off and attempt to become snobbishly cold and sterile about conception. She walks through her initial ideas, she delves into the character of her mother and father who are key components in her life as well as her close friends. The other women in her life somewhat stay at a distance most likely because....in her real life that's where those women are.....at a distance. The piece was touching and made me reflect about all the memories children should have. I loved it. I felt warm..... Watch it with a cup of tea....and chill out. Intellectualizing the choice to have a baby has already been done. That's why we still have career women of 55 saying "is it too late to have a baby?". See more 11/02/2015 Should have been edited down - the last hour of the film was unnecessary and too self-centred. Could have been a moving film if they got rid of all the random sequences. See more 03/08/2015 I could not sleep and checked out HBO documentaries and picked this one. I was so moved by her documentary and her struggles with her father daughter relationship. I am so surprised by such negative reviews. I am a mom, with college aged children and a husband of 25 years. So much in this compelling documentary I saw relationship struggles I can relate to. What a moving tribute to parenthood. See more 08/29/2013 Okay. Decent at the beginning, but then it becomes a story about how everyone should feel bad for because she is struggling. Nope. She choose a carreer that did not pay very well. Then she choose to have a child by herself with zero financial thinking behind it. She just assumed people would step up and help her when she doesn't deserve any help. She just expects it. See more Read all reviews
