      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

A bizarrely memorable sci-fi/comedy hybrid, Fried Barry may be an acquired taste, but it certainly isn't chicken.

Cody Corrall Chicago Reader Kruger's debut feature is not for those looking for a calm and cohesive experience, but if a manic and disgusting joyride is more what you're after, Fried Barry is for you. May 11, 2021 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review Largely indescribable, not for the faint of heart, and for fans only...but there are really interesting moments in it. May 10, 2021 Full Review Ian Freer Empire Magazine Cheap and not so cheerful, Fried Barry might be episodic in the extreme but it has spurts of brilliance, imagination and a real sense of risk taking. Dirty, lurid fun. Rated: 3/5 May 10, 2021 Full Review Kelly Mintzer Vague Visages The greatest and most unexpected pleasure of Fried Barry is the pure vein of sweetness that pulses beneath the surface. Apr 2, 2024 Full Review Witney Seibold Critically Acclaimed Podcast If you like your films depraved, sick and greasy, you'll love 'Fried Barry!' And luckily, I like my films depraved, sick, and greasy. Sep 14, 2021 Full Review Elias Savada Film International This is one of the most unusual alien visitation films you'll ever watch. Especially if you don't give any thought to why the other-worldly presence was careless enough to pick Barry for its stopover on Earth. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 23, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Graham M More like Deep Fried Barry, it's somewhere between Bad Boy Bubby and Titane. Terrific! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review Charles B awesome - totally rad and crazy Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/17/23 Full Review Brad P Fried Barry confronts the human condition and addiction in a journey fueled by drugs, aliens, and sex with honesty and humor. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/01/23 Full Review Audience Member A little unconventional, and the start may feel a little weird, but as the movie progresses, you get a better gist of what is happening and the crazy ride that the central character goes through. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review robert v I absolutely loved it. It was random and in every direction. It was like what would happen if ET possessed a crack head in the worst side of town. It really kept me guessing what was real and what wasn't. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Time to get weird. Meet Barry (Gary Green). He doesn't have a lot going for him, so he regularly drinks and does various drugs. He's not exactly somebody you would label a keeper. One day he gets abducted by aliens and will no longer be in control of his actions. Now I knew next to nothing about this. I saw a tweet recommendation, read the plot synopsis, and added it to my watchlist. It sounded like a wild ride, and those are the movies that I typically seek out when I can. Fried Barry is just that: a crazy story that doesn't have to adhere to any rulebook. I don't even know if I would fully classify this as a movie. It's not something you watch; you experience it because it is that much of a trip. It has a lot of similarities to the NC-17 music video from The Prodigy in the 90s, "Smack My Bitch Up," in the way that it gets experimental. There's not even all that much story here. Once Barry's brain gets hijacked, it's basically just him wondering from encounter to encounter in Cape Town, but it just keeps it moving so quickly that you can't help but go along with it. I don't think I can speak all that much to Gary Green's acting abilities. He doesn't have too much dialogue in this to be able to tell, but boy, does he have the face that this story needs. The way he can distort and change his expressions makes you believe that he got possessed by something unworldly. I also was a big fan of this soundtrack and the sound mixing. They are always doing something disorienting with the music, and it is hugely impactful to your viewing. The dialect can be a bit tricky at times. This takes place in Cape Town, and I can't say that I have an ear for the accent, but if you give any character more than one line, then your ear should be able to adjust. Fried Barry is not the movie to recommend to everybody. No sir. There is an excess amount of sex, drugs, and violence that a large portion of people won't be able to get behind. However, if you love a movie that gets outhouse rat bonkers, then I give this a big recommendation, as this is about as inspired as this type of movie ever gets. I could never nail down where it was headed, I just buckled my seatbelt and enjoyed the rollercoaster ride. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
