Wesley Morris Boston Globe Garon Stupide is the rare piece of European sexual realism centered completely on a boy's awakening. Young women have dominated the genre in the last 10 years, especially in France. So the film is a welcome, though inferior changeup. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 24, 2006 Full Review John Monaghan Detroit Free Press Unfortunately, just when you think Garcon Stupide is going somewhere, Baier screws it up with a melodramatic climax and a political message. Rated: 2/4 Feb 17, 2006 Full Review Desson Thomson Washington Post Garcon Stupide never quite convinces us that it has a greater moral agenda beyond its graphic material. Feb 16, 2006 Full Review Gary M. Kramer Out Magazine Despite these occasional frustrations, Garçon Stupide is appealing, right up to its very sweet ending. May 16, 2022 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter Swiss director Lionel Baier gives us a sexy twist on the usual coming-of-age story. Audience Member He's not really a "stupid boy" more like "naive boy." An interesting near-miss that would have been better with more oomph in the drama. Movie is like the main character, laid back and unsure of itself. The best scenes are when Loic (Pierre Chatagny) speaks to the camera who represents his older companion. We get to like him during these conversations. Otherwise, he's someone you'd want to avoid; nonchalant with his tricks and dismissive of this roommate Marie (Natacha Koutchoumo who underplays her role here). It's supposed to be a coming-of-age story but the character acknowledges he's gay but curious about his career and lifestyle. This ambiguity leads him to adopt different personalties, a stalker, a photographer, and that he's straight. It's more like coming to terms with your life but the character is only 20-years old which is understandable for someone so naive. He wants people to like him, feel attracted to him, but doesn't want to reciprocate. The section where he stalks a soccer player (Rui Pedro Alves) is very strange and unnecessary. Pierre Chatagny is a young, handsome character who would be more interesting if the script was better. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Too much flesh on screen to be taken seriously. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Putting the ugly film poster + DVD cover & some graphic, explicit sex scenes aside, the story & narrative are actually quite good. What really awkward is, like many French directors do, Lionel Baier has pull the whole narrative-carriage out near the end of the movie, by blowing something up- something huge like some global, political, social events (religious & spiritual things are also commonly seen in French Cinema in similar case) which have totally nothing to do with its premiss. Perhaps it was what the director meant to say for the whole feature actually, it sounds very odd every time still. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Very good movie from Swiss director Lionel Baier and very realistic too. The acting is perfect and the images are raw. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A coming-of-age movie, without the usual cliché of this genre but raw stimulated sex scenes instead. Pierre Chatagny successfully blended his real-life personality with his character's, which resulted in a believable Loic. However the director let the story slip and disintegrate towards the end. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Disguised as a doco, the meandering "plot" (and I use that term loosely) follows a young boy in searching for a sense of identity. It meanders along, then in the last five minutes tries to pull together some cohesion. But fails. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Read all reviews
