Set in the changing world of the late 1960s, "Girl, Interrupted" is the searing true story of Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder), a young woman who finds herself at a renowned mental institution for troubled young women, where she must choose between the world of people who belong on the inside -- like the seductive and dangerous Lisa (Angelina Jolie) -- or the often difficult world of reality on the outside.

Critics Consensus

Angelina Jolie gives an intense performance, but overall Girl, Interrupted suffers from thin, predictable plotting that fails to capture the power of its source material.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online It's an interesting story, based on actual events. Rated: A Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan Time Out Does it matter that every time Jolie's offscreen the film wilts a little? Ryder should be perfect as the bright spark; her lines are sharp as a knife. There's a gap, however, between what we hear and what we see. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Peter Stack San Francisco Chronicle A muddled production that misses the jarring tone of the autobiographical book by Susanna Kaysen on which it is based. The film is entertaining, but not very powerful. Rated: 2/4 Jun 18, 2002 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins As a picture that wishes to examine different characters in a specific environment (and during a brief period) rather than telling a precisely structured story, the pacing is a touch slow, though the character development is excellent. Rated: 6/10 Nov 8, 2024 Full Review Michael Cuby them. In our modern political climate, I can't think of a better narrative to revisit. Sep 28, 2022 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine Girl, Interrupted is well-performed but hollow - and ultimately unsatisfying. Rated: 5/10 Oct 28, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Elena F. Great movie portrayed the situation perfectly for the time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/11/25 Full Review Raccoon T I thought it was a really moving movie. The actor did a great job portraying the characters they played, especially Angelina Jolie. Overall, the depth and the way it got you in the feels and connected to so many made it a good movie. I really liked it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/08/25 Full Review Peach pastel A I personally think this movie is one of the best portrayals of mental health in young women I’ve seen in film to date. Winona did an amazing job but, it was really Jolie’s acting that really stood out for me. I completely understand why she won the Oscar for best supporting actress. Every time she was on screen it gave me a sense of anxiety coupled with anticipation. You never knew what her character would do next and, that was exhilarating. My only complaint about the is movie is, I wish we saw more of Daisy. Her story was tragic and I loved how Brittany played her with a sense of heartbreaking honesty. Daisy was one of the many highlights in this movie for me. I do wish Brittany had more screen time though. This movie showed how people dealt with mental health back in the late 1960s and all the improvements that would need to be made. I would 100% recommend this movie especially to young girls such as myself. It could help open up conversations on mental health and, perhaps get people who need help, help. This is a definite rewatch for me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/17/25 Full Review Athena S Acting is on point the whole movie. Winona’s performance is perfect same with the whole cast. Realistic and relatable to people who struggle with these issues. Would watch again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/29/25 Full Review Hala E Literally one of my favs 💓 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/14/25 Full Review thiago s Filme bacana, o roteiro é bacaninha, as cenas são bacanas, a história é boa, o elenco é bacana, e alguns ajudam a melhorar o filme, os personagens são bons, e o filme teve um drama que melhorou o filme, mas o filme deveria ter cenas um pouco melhores e mais relevantes.
