Something has surfaced in Tokyo Bay. As the Prime Minister of Japan pleads with the public to remain calm, a horrific creature of tremendous size makes landfall in the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Then it evolves. The government assembles a motley task force to combat the monster when an envoy from the US Department of State delivers a folder of classified documents. On its cover is written "GODZILLA." From visionary directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, SHIN GODZILLA offers a thrilling origin story to one of cinema's greatest creations. Propelled by astounding visual effects and rapid fire dialogue, SHIN GODZILLA is equal parts pulse-pounding action film and venomous political satire, worthy of the franchise's towering history.

Critics Consensus

Godzilla Resurgence offers a refreshingly low-fi -- and altogether entertaining -- return to the monster's classic creature-feature roots.

Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) What Shin Godzilla does offer is one major counter: Godzilla's real home is Japan, and anything else feels like a glitzy vacation. Rated: 3/5 Aug 16, 2017 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Thirty-one films and 63 years later, the monster has seldom looked better. The final shot will haunt your dreams. Rated: 4/5 Aug 15, 2017 Full Review Owen Williams Empire Magazine Coming off like a peculiar mash-up of The Host and Dr Strangelove, Shin Godzilla is weirdly paced but does add a new twist to the old formula. Rated: 3/5 Aug 13, 2017 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine It is a film less about giant monsters and a lot more about the inefficiencies of bureaucracy and the obfuscation of politics. I loved it. Rated: 8/10 Aug 2, 2024 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Though a notable experiment in furthering the legacy of this famous movie monster, it’s very far from solid entertainment. Rated: 4/10 Jul 20, 2024 Full Review Tom Cassidy Common Sense Media The movie's cast of Japanese A-listers lifts an already strong idea to create a touching, inspirational, and downright thrilling 21st-century monster movie. Raymond H I think the movie was boring it was hard to follow and the way they had Godzilla emerging from Tokyo Bay was like something out of the movie The Blob he's mutating as he's ravaging Tokyo then at the end they stop him with some weird liquid injected into his body really I just don't get it I don't recommend this movie I've grown up on Godzilla and I pretty much seen every movie including this one and if I bought a Godzilla movie collection I would make sure that this one was not in it Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/25 Full Review N P "Shin Godzilla" is a widespread, overwhelmingly covered take on the longstanding monster franchise that mainly focuses on how each Japanese citizen from various backgrounds, whether that be a student, government worker, military officer, environmental expert, news respondent, and even a foreign bureaucrat will react to such a dangerous situation, in real time. Not just that their own reactions, but numerous interactions as well as back and forth conversations between specialised co-workers to sectors from the early benign stages progressing towards a viciously menacing threat to society and many lives. The digital aspect was a well used update for this iteration, and the screenwriter, Hideaki Anno, heavily researched the recent 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, and interviewed close witnesses - to best showcase how tough government decisions are made and real-time effects it has on its citizens. I would rate this higher objectively; unfortunately, political and disaster motion pictures are not really my thing. But, I want to urge people to try watching "Shin Godzilla" and films like it. Anno brought a genuine care and attention to detail to make sure that a story like this, that has affected millions of people, gets told right. "Shin Godzilla" has a focus on people, and that should always be the narrative. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/14/25 Full Review Oaklee D Imagine Godzilla meets body horror meets political drama and you have this movie. It's essentially what would happen if David Cronenberg directed a Godzilla film. It does drag a little bit in places but overall worth a look. The scene where Godzilla goes atomic is absolute nightmare fuel and is worth a watch for that scene alone America turned Godzilla into a superhero of sorts and Japan has shown us the monster he really is with this film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/08/25 Full Review Stephen C Happy 9th anniversary!!!!!!!!!!!! Success in 2 hours even!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review Ryan U it's godzillaaaaaaaaa Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/03/25 Full Review Jackie L As a fan of Godzilla and Hideaki Anno's work as a filmmaker I was thrilled by the movie's retelling of the Godzilla mythos reimagined for a 21st century backdrop. The movie presents a terrible and terrifying take of Godzilla as a giant creature in a very incredible pain gifted with a reactive power of evolution that extends to "godly" proportions as seen in the concept art for the movie. HOWEVER, even for Godzilla fans, the satirical commentary of government ineptitude and bureaucracy in the storytelling, even though they work in a narrative sense, will get die-hard fans and casual viewers feeling bored from the padded runtime.
