What to Know

Critics Consensus

Godzilla Resurgence offers a refreshingly low-fi -- and altogether entertaining -- return to the monster's classic creature-feature roots.

Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) What Shin Godzilla does offer is one major counter: Godzilla's real home is Japan, and anything else feels like a glitzy vacation. Rated: 3/5 Aug 16, 2017 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Thirty-one films and 63 years later, the monster has seldom looked better. The final shot will haunt your dreams. Rated: 4/5 Aug 15, 2017 Full Review Owen Williams Empire Magazine Coming off like a peculiar mash-up of The Host and Dr Strangelove, Shin Godzilla is weirdly paced but does add a new twist to the old formula. Rated: 3/5 Aug 13, 2017 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine It is a film less about giant monsters and a lot more about the inefficiencies of bureaucracy and the obfuscation of politics. I loved it. Rated: 8/10 Aug 2, 2024 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Though a notable experiment in furthering the legacy of this famous movie monster, it’s very far from solid entertainment. Rated: 4/10 Jul 20, 2024 Full Review Tom Cassidy Common Sense Media The movie's cast of Japanese A-listers lifts an already strong idea to create a touching, inspirational, and downright thrilling 21st-century monster movie. Justin T This is almost certainly the worst Godzilla film. It’s almost as if the filmmakers wanted to make a political drama but were told they had to make a kaiju movie. But they also had no idea how to make a political drama. Or a Godzilla movie. The whole thing is dreadful on almost every level. This is serious and boring like the american predecessor but with much worse visual effects. The film starts with fifteen minutes of boardroom boredom then a bad CGI goofy looking monster. Then there’s some city smashing and it’s mostly from the right angle but it’s so brief and there is no human story, only the political one and I hate politics. It ignores all previous Godzilla films so could be considered a restart but they also ignore anything that made the Godzilla films popular. The serious political drama combined with goofy visual effects and creature design is so jarring and unengaging, it’s not fun or exciting. Constant talking doesn’t make a good film, the story sucks and it’s not interesting. There is goofy music throughout except for the classic Godzilla soundtrack which is great to hear. It feels more like one of the sixties entries that almost killed the franchise but without the fun and with bad CGI. It’s horribly edited, for example using three shots to unroll a map with military rock drum music blasting, ugh hate it. It’s over 45 minutes until Godzilla as we know him appears just beating the American 2014. The whole film lacks any personality. Just as you think it’s getting better with Godzilla in Tokyo smashing stuff then drive all these trains into him and they spiral into the air like they are trying to stand up. It looks ridiculous. Terrible film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review Patrick S N E U R O N. A C T I V A T I O N. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Leprechaun K My favorite Godzilla movie. Creature designs were superb. Best looking Godzilla yet. The art direction and style of the movie created a fresh new look as the latest addition to the franchise. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Gianni M This film makes godzilla look like a the real villian he is. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/25 Full Review Mz. Ghostly. A spectacular and horrifying remake of the original classic, Shin Godzilla starts from scratch with a brand new mythos that's just as effective in showcasing the horrors of nuclear disaster. A for sure all time greatest when it comes to the franchise. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Nathan T This movie shows what CGI can do Godzilla takes on multiple forms in this movie and one of the best atomic breath scenes I have seen in the Godzilla franchise I really hope they make a sequel Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review Read all reviews
