First of all, Rotten Tomatoes has this movie mis-titled. The title is Shadows and Lies. If you're looking for plot, character development or snappy dialog, this movie is not for you. If you're interested in light and darkness, cinematography, atmosphere, pacing, and imagery, then you'll love it if you have two hours to kill in a contemplation of mood (or more accurately, brood). Yes, many people thought this an effort in futility, but although there's a lot of 'walking while frowning' shots, the scenes where Franco and company interact are minimalistic and full of pregnant silences that create dynamic tension. Martin Donovan is an underused, nuanced actor that I can always appreciate, and although his dialog could be cleaned up a bit for sharpness (that's the writer/director though) his interaction with Franco is efficacious.
Definitely constructed as an art house film that broods at times, mixed in with showcases of naturalistic beauty, a la hummingbirds and jellyfish.
