Critics Consensus

Director/co-writer Jane Campion takes a stab at subverting the psycho-sexual thriller genre with In the Cut, but gets tangled in her own abstraction.

In the Cut is masterful in its suggestion of the ambient, omnipresent air of sexual threat that exists in traditional heterosexual dynamics. Go to Full Review

A raw, tactile consideration of the mystery and suspense of touch and want. Her style is gorgeous and discomfiting, with febrile camera moves, warm yet cloacal lighting, gestures in ruby-and-amber haze. Go to Full Review

Campion paired a crime story with her heroine’s transformative, erotically-charged journey of self-discovery, and the result is a luscious drama of much emotional insight... Go to Full Review

In The Cut doesn’t quite bring together all its disparate threads. The film thrives as it tackles the cerebral and contradictory desires of Frannie, but can’t quite wrap up the murder mystery in the story. Go to Full Review

Madison L @Clothesgirl Apr 29 Way back in 2003, while having lunch with friends, they were all complaining about a horrible Meg Ryan movie that they had seen & they all vowed to never pay money for another Meg Ryan movie. Meg Ryan masturbating, the violence, and the film vulgarity were some of the reasons my friends walked out of the theater in the first 20 minutes! I didn't recall the name of the movie, but the other night on Roku, I ran across a free film named "In the Cut" & quickly realized this was the movie my friends hated. I endured the film for only 40 minutes (it was that awful) & fast forwarded to the end to see who was the killer. Meg Ryan is not known as a great actress & without her previous crutch of being the cute love interest in a feel good movie, my having to watch her acting attempt in this film was painful. Mark Ruffalo gave a good performance of being a slimy degenerate. The plot was trash, & all of the characters were trash. See more Jo S. @jos10 Jan 4 I need to rewatch it to focus on the aspects of the film I liked besides the soft you-know-what (couldn’t think of a euphemism.) See more Alain E @AlainE Jun 14 Visually superb with saturated colors in low lighting. The story creates ambiguity about the character played by Mark Ruffalo. Meg Ryan looks lovely and interprets her conflicted persona very well. The movie rewards the patient viewer, but obviously its intended audience is not people who want to see a classic crime movie. She plays the dumbest skank I've ever seen.. and having known a few dumb as rocks skanks in my life, not one was as dumb or as skanky as Meg in this stupid movie, to the point that I found her level of stupid skankiness completely unbelievable. Hard pass. See more Tammy D @RT35329443 10/05/2024 what a waste of time. low grade soft porn at best. no real storyline. I will never get those minutes back See more Read all reviews
