Critics Consensus

Director/co-writer Jane Campion takes a stab at subverting the psycho-sexual thriller genre with In the Cut, but gets tangled in her own abstraction.

Kathleen Sachs Chicago Reader Campion’s In the Cut is a criminally neglected masterpiece... Dec 27, 2022 Full Review Philippa Snow New Statesman In the Cut is masterful in its suggestion of the ambient, omnipresent air of sexual threat that exists in traditional heterosexual dynamics. Feb 18, 2021 Full Review Joshua Rothkopf In These Times Meg Ryan is desperately, unpersuasively naked in Jane Campion's ludicrous erotic thriller... Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Diana Tuova Loud and Clear Reviews Campion paired a crime story with her heroine’s transformative, erotically-charged journey of self-discovery, and the result is a luscious drama of much emotional insight... Rated: 4/5 Nov 12, 2024 Full Review Justine Smith Vague Visages In The Cut doesn’t quite bring together all its disparate threads. The film thrives as it tackles the cerebral and contradictory desires of Frannie, but can’t quite wrap up the murder mystery in the story. Jun 6, 2024 Full Review Dave Giannini InSession Film It is a wildly uneven film, but the high points absolutely make it worthy of our time. Feb 27, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Hurtin F I used to like Meg Ryan, but I was shocked by her role in this. She plays the dumbest skank I've ever seen.. and having known a few dumb as rocks skanks in my life, not one was as dumb or as skanky as Meg in this stupid movie, to the point that I found her level of stupid skankiness completely unbelievable. Hard pass. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Tammy D what a waste of time. low grade soft porn at best. no real storyline. I will never get those minutes back Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Steven t Really good idea for the movie but it just doesn't work. The look of the.movie is great with a 80s Trinity look and feel. However it just doesn't come together. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Nancy M I just watched In the Cut. It’s not for everyone. I found Air very disturbing but I kept watching because of Meg Ryan’s performance; her performance is so well done and interesting. Not many actresses could have pulled it off. The plot is interesting on a number of levels. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/24 Full Review KB B It was pretty good but I didn't care for ending at all. I'd never want to watch it again. Watch it if there's nothing else on. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/29/24 Full Review susie s This movie is highly underrated. The acting was outstanding .
