Christopher L I’d recommend the book, however the movie is lacking in many places. Cheesy directorial choices and a fuzzy telling of events, this film would have worked better had it been done as a documentary. True story about a kid who graduates from college, and abruptly leaves his life and inheritance behind and moves out west to explore, hitch hike and live in the wilderness. Was cool to see his interactions with nature and animals and the bonds he made along the way. Especially with Ron - the old, single veteran who lost his wife and son to a car accident. He had a big impact on him. Was cute how he even asked to adopt him. Fascinating how he felt like having any money made him less free so he never wanted any. A bit slow and the character wasn't super lovable, although admirable. Solid film. 2.5/5 rewatch Rated 4/5 Stars •  Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Kyle C This movie really lulls you into thinking it’s gonna be a lot more self-important and sappy than it ends up being. Right off the bat, the protagonist is pretty insufferable, and he stays that way for the whole movie, honestly, but he also goes through a lot of growth and you kind of develop a soft spot for him. There’s a surprisingly insightful message behind the whole thing and Carine’s narration helps solidify any ambiguity without feeling forced. The story is told cleverly by jumping between the past and the “present” (really 1992), giving us more and more sympathy for Chris as the movie continues. Though his flaws seem obvious to everyone at first, the depth of the backstory reveals many complicating factors that provide a rich canvas for storytelling. Some of the character interactions (like the Kristen Stewart love-interest plot) feel a little forced, but for the most part, they’re effective at showing us who Chris was. Ultimately just a pretentious kid unable to face his privilege or admit his mistakes, Chris didn’t deserve the ending that befell him. But this movie tells the story with grace and restraint, making it not only an effective biopic but a deeply engrossing watch. And it’s only rounded out with that killer soundtrack from Eddie Vedder. I also love Eddie Vedder's music here as it fits perfectly with Chris' journey.
