Richard James Havis Hollywood Reporter This slice of Nordic doom and gloom envelops the gruesome behavior of its subjects in a jaunty charm. Nov 28, 2007 Full Review Ed Gonzalez Slant Magazine Peter Schnau Fog's Danish hot-potato The Art of Crying is a failure, mostly for its desperate sense of trying. Oct 6, 2006 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Helmer Fog tries to treat his dysfunctional family saga, about incest and child abuse, in darkly humorous way like Solondz' Happiness, but the dry humor may not translate and viewers may see Denmark's Oscar entry as more depressing than enlightening. Audience Member We follow Allan, a Danish eleven year old that tries to keep his dysfunctional family together as loads of bad stuff happen. One of the grimmest dark comedies out there, where there are little uplifting moments accept from some phrases from Allan. The English title is pretty misleading but that does not take away that this is a film that should have a wide audience all over the world. Well acted, greatly told. Not the best film to shake of your hangover to, so I guess my grade isn't that fair. A strong film that is a bit boring, still disturbing and impressive in it's own way. 6.5 out of 10 red pills. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't know if I'm to believe the whole story could be true, certainly some moments that feel awkward that they would play out the way they did. Other than that, wonderful acting and the tinge of humor in an otherwise black, black story is spot on. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Another depressing(?) danish film - seems like we're the peadophilia factory, and we just can't stop doing them. If you are a foreigner, this film is well acted, if you live in Denmark, it's laughable - enjoy! I hated it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member No es un melodrama familiar convencional. Más en pantallanueve.blogspot.com Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member a good piece of work but also kind of a wasted potential and a failed attempt to make a Hanneke-like movie. the director could have thrown too much tragedy into one pot: some ingredients are tragicomic, others strictly tragic, which gives you a bit of a cinematic heartburn. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member A difficult movie to watch, with issues one more complex than the other. I reached a point where the cries of the father tapped on my nerves and I just couldn't stand him; but the performance of the little boy is outstanding. A movie I won't watch again and certainly I won't buy the DVD either - but an interesting insight into a deeply disturbed and dysfunctional family.
