The 1970s Italian "Poliziotteschi" genre of Eurocrime thrillers has increasingly become one of my favorite exploitation genres. This film is based on the real-life 1969 Piazza Fontana bombing in Milan. Police inspector Mattea Rolandi (Claudia Cassinelli) is witness to a hotel bombing. Prosecutor General Di Federico (Arthur Kennedy) is appointed to head the investigation but whoever ordered the bombing wants to get to a suspect seen fleeing the scene before the authorities do. When a fellow police officer and friend is killed, the intellectual and unconventional Rolandi investigates on his own and asks his university-going girlfriend Papaya (Sara Sperati, given more to do with the "girlfriend" role than most actresses in this genre) to help locate the young bombing suspect before his bosses hired killer can locate and kill him. The men behind the bombing appear to be a powerful and connected cabal, adding a political aspect to the plot. Directed by Luciano Ercoli, this is a very good example of this genre. Whenever the pace of the film slows, Erocoli has Rolandi roar off in his powerful Mercedes sedan (gas not diesel he keeps pointing out) to some section of Milan to chase down a lead.

Killer Cop isnt a action packed film, hell theres not even the obligatory French Connection inspired car chase thats prevalent in Poliziotteschi's, but it is a well shot film and theres plenty of fun stuff going on to keep the Euro Crime fan happy. The story moves the film along at a brisk pace even with its lack of action. But the downfall of the film is the ending wich left me scratching my head.
