The film explores sin, doubt, temptation, and moral conflict through a vulnerable Christ, portrayed convincingly by Willem Dafoe, yet I never fully connected with him or the film’s message. Its insistence on love and faith as universal answers felt difficult to accept from my agnostic perspective, creating a constant emotional barrier. Visually, the muted colors, functional lighting, and slow pacing resulted in monotony rather than atmosphere. Still, I appreciate the film’s willingness to focus on the internal struggle of an individual burdened by something greater than himself. It is bold, thoughtful, and valuable — just not emotionally resonant for me. Scorsese goes against type with this film for sure but his usual gangster flicks are better.
