What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec is an old-school adventure yarn with a distaff European - and generally rather delightful - spin.

Noel Murray The Dissolve The film lacks the more corrosive aspects of [Jacques] Tardi's work, but Besson replaces it with something that gives the story a larger shape and meaning. Rated: 3/5 Aug 13, 2013 Full Review Philip French Guardian It is a pleasure to look at, but the performances are heavy-handed rather than pleasantly stylised and the whimsy over-abundant. Apr 23, 2011 Full Review Independent (UK) Rated: 3/5 Apr 22, 2011 Full Review Jason Best Movie Talk Imagine a zany mix of Amélie and Lara Croft, Indiana Jones and Tintin, and you have Louise Bourgoin's plucky heroine. Dec 5, 2020 Full Review Sophie Kingston-Smith CineVue So good-natured that whether the audience are smiling delightedly or groaning inwardly, all will be enjoying its visual beauty and plucky spirit. Rated: 3/5 Jan 28, 2019 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson Flick Filosopher This is what comic-book movies look like when they're not blown up into $200 million monstrosities: friendly and eldritch and kinda cosy even in the middle of outrageous escapades. rob b Old school fantastic adventure par excellence. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Liam D Luc Besson's (Subway, Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior) best movie since the Fifth Element and is a fun time adventure that I want to see more off Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/15/22 Full Review david l The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec is a wonderful 2010 fantasy adventure the likes of which we have rarely seen in this century. It channels European comic-books as well as the Indiana Jones movies, but done better than the latter due to a refreshingly lesser emphasis on frenetic action. It has gorgeous sets, costumes and locations while the humor is also surprisingly good. It's such an enjoyable flick that was elevated to greater heights thanks to a stupendous performance from Louise Bourgoin as the plucky, funny and immensely charming heroine. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A wonderful surprise. An old fashioned, witty adventure yarn with a great leading lady and supporting cast. It's been discribed as a hyprid between Amelie and Indiana Jones, and I have to agree. But there is a lower budget charm in this tale. It has a self awareness about it's self that makes it a fun time where the characters seem to be totally in on the absurdness that the film abounds in, much to the viewers benefit. Fun and entertaining in it's own eccentric, but enchanting way. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved every minute of it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Louise Bourgoin is both charming and captivating, and it's a lot of fun watching a female adventuress swashbuckle her way around the world. The story is odd, but I found it charmingly odd and lots of fun, with a lot of equally entertaining side characters. I really wish Adele had gotten a few further adventures in the form of sequels.
