Not scary and far too convoluted for its own good. If you want to be scared, find something else

I saw Jim Gaffigan was in this and that’s all I needed to know. Liked the movie a lot. Quiet, measured, thought provoking. A sweet film about love, loss and hope.

I thought I was going to watch one of those ever-present ghost-chaser movies that you can find on many streaming services. In a way, I guess I found one, but not one that I expected. What a pleasant surprise Light From Light is. An overall tone of gentleness and authenticity; light on the supernatural elements; and focused on the story of the principals. Great cast and direction. Recommended for those who want something different. Think "The Vast of Night" rather than "Paranormal Activity"

Spoilers: Props first to the casting director, as Marin is not only a real pro but perfect for this role, and Gaffigan also fit the bill just right, as who knew how well he can act. But this has text and subtext and Marin's ambiguous tears at the end were the perfect ending. Is she crying for her unfulfilled life, of which she says everyone is nice at first but then lets you down, as was the father, now gone, of her high school senior son, with whom she lives? Or crying for joy about a good end, her most successful ever, as her very scientific paranormal probe into Jim's "haunted house" tells them, yes, his dead wife's spirit is there. When her son says to her that his study buddy, a teen girl, will just lead him to a breakup if he gets romantically involved with her, which the girl obviously wants, Marin gives him a thumbs up, as if to say romance leads to breakups like mine, so stay away. And it all raises the question: Is she working on paranormal cases because she really wants a better place to be proven than this planet which has left her unfulfilled, feeling unloved and destined for no love. Her son finally does break the ice with the girl, kisses her, as if to say Mom's wrong, and fear of romance ending badly is no reason to just plain avoid it. When the kid said he will go to college even if he just has to get loans, she was hurt, but it was him laying down the marker that his life was now his, he was growing up. And so Marin's tears at the end also may signify the onslaught of her empty nest, or that the love Jim has continuing for his wife, who was killed in a plane crash, and she for him, could be something Marin can find too. It gave her back her hope. She and Jim's talk about each other was surprisingly deep sharing, and we wondered if a spark was there for the two of them. But their sharing was just an organic byproduct of her doing the paranormal work for Jim for no charge. If he had been paying, it surely wouldn't have been as intimate, if not romantic, though the hint was that it could go there. The title says the light from the next life can light up the dark spots of this life, only if providing hope for more lightness here. Very well done, realistic characters, so kudos to screenwriter.

I just didn't connect with this and couldn't get over the slow pace and the double swerve in the closing moments. Believe this premise that we pound into your head and then rug pulled. Go watch Ghost! Jim Gaffigan is a funny guy, but he's not a dramatic actor. Final Score: 2.7/10
