Those people who have criticized this movie as too slow, B&W, without tension, simply are unable to be attuned to what underlies the film but is given away in the title- Limbo. The cop is in limbo, the townfolk, the killer when finally identified. And certainly the family torn apart by the event twenty years past.
And really, the whole aboriginal culture is portrayed in stasis and fragmentation.
For the cinematography alone this deserves praise, for its cadence, raw sparseness, and most of all its portrayals. The photography reminded me of David Byrnes' 'True Stories', though miles apart in content, of course.

The bleak outback of nothingness for miles was the most interesting part of the movie. Never felt anything but pity for any of the characters. What was the value added for his addiction? The movie was a slow walk around a big circle to end up where you started from and nothing changes.

Limbo actually starts out strong as a modern western, but eventually it just spins its wheels and sputters.

Apart from the stunning cinematography and some convincing performances, this movie is a recycled crime noir, half-baked with clichés of the genre. The hero is a lonesome, emotionally wrecked detective who becomes too personally involved in a case. No reason is offered for the detective's sudden deepened interest in the case, and most plot conflicts in the film are sidestepped without providing real solutions.
