Nancy Banks-Smith Guardian From where I sit, it was perhaps a pity that the production leaned so honestly towards Mrs Baldwin. David F This is an excellent adaptation of two of Nancy Mitford's novels: Love in a Cold Climate, and The Pursuit of Love. By adapting 2 novels in one 2.5 hour mini series, the filmmakers were able to cherry pick the best stuff, leading to a film that is never dull and full of action and humour. Everything about this is top notch: the script zips along, following all of Mitford's best madcap characters and they fall in love and fight with their families. The acting is top notch, and the period recreation is excellent. They really get the tone right, as well, leading to an adaptation that is actually very faithful to the world of the novels, which I loved. I was on chapter four and it felt like i was wittnesing a slow paced movie about absolutely nothing. I was waiting for something to happen, but noope, just jibber jabber about insignificant details, details taken almost to atom level about nothing. Well, true that it was about people from a boring country but still...at least in a book you can make it a bit more interesting. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Delightful characterizations of the Upper Crust of English life and all their quirks. Good production if a bit pressed for time as they compress two novels by Mitford. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Overall a good production of a fairly shallow, insubstantial British family based on a novels by Nancy Mitford. I read the novels several years ago, and believe the two BBC productions of them are fairly faithful, and I have the same objections to all of them: the characters strike me as juvenile, spoiled, and fairly empty. I never believe in Linda Radlett's character, and never understand why Fanny admires her. Polly's character is incomprehensible, and many of the other characters are in varying degrees repugnant. One problem with this version is that Linda's character is played by an actress who is not beautiful enough for the part--serious miscasting, in that Linda herself seems admirable chiefly for her great beauty, coupled with a naive understanding of love. The role required a stunningly beautiful actress. I didn't know Mike Ditka was an actor, and he was spot on with the accent. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
