What to Know

Critics Consensus

Trying too hard to be clever in a Pulp Fiction kind of way, this film succumbs to a convoluted plot, overly stylized characters, and dizzying set design.

Neil S Forever one of my favorite movies and names. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review D P This was a cool movie. I had to get past the racial messaging here and just enjoy the slickness. My mind kept going back to having black and Jooish people running underworld gangs while torturing helpless gamblers for obscene wealth. Let me just be glad they were paid handsomely for these acting gigs. Never mind the fact that these gangs could have been Russian, Italian, or Irish. Nope. Black and Jooish. But that's okay. The movie was slick and stylish and entertaining. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review Matthew D Josh Hartnett and Lucy Liu are fabulous in this hilarious neo-noir caper! Director Paul McGuigan’s neo-noir crime comedy Lucky Number Slevin (2006) is pretty excellent. Slickly directed, smartly written, and superbly acted, Slevin is full of surprises. Tonally, Lucky Number Slevin is like Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Sin City, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I love how Slevin almost works best as a romantic comedy between Josh Hartnett and Lucy Liu besides all the hysterical crime comedy. Slevin is such a wonderful film with a fiercely slick style, but also an indie film charm. Writer Jason Smilovic deftly balances crime comedy, romantic comedy, and neo-noir thriller elements into one killer script. I did not see the major twist coming or all the wild development. It’s part The Wrong Man, North by Northwest, Vertigo, and part an assassin mashup of old film noirs. It feels so refreshing, fast paced, clever, funny, romantic, gritty, and unexpected. Every line is one twist or reveal after another. The humor is very plucky and whimsical, while the crime narrative is viciously violent. Revenge is sweet and complex Josh Hartnett is delightful as the nonchalant hero and unlikely assassin Slevin Kelevra. Hartnett plays it cool and calm despite being like The Dude in The Big Lebowski. His character has a ton of depth and emotional range that Hartnett plays beautifully. Lucy Liu is insanely gorgeous, absolutely hilarious, and very touching as Slevin’s love interest Lindsey. Liu effortlessly charms with her bubbly personality. Bruce Willis’ enigmatic assassin Smith is very cool and convincing. He’s quite subtle and collected here with an increasing amount of emotions as Slevin goes along. Stanley Tucci’s tough cop Detective Brikowski is fun, especially as he threatens Slevin repeatedly. Ben Kingsley’s hardened mob boss The Rabbi is a riot. He’s quite scary and serious. Morgan Freeman’s ruthless mob leader The Boss is amiable in manner, but cunning as one of the villains. Michael Rubenfeld’s Yitzchak the Fairy, Peter Outerbridge’s idiotic Detective Dumbrowski, Dorian Missick’s stern henchman Elvis, and Mykelti Williamson’s mean henchman Sloe are great side characters. Scott Gibson’s Max is heartbreaking, Sam Jaeger’s Nick Fisher is intriguing, Danny Aiello plays the bookie Roth as cautious and concerned, and Corey Stoll’s blunt henchman Saul works well opposite Rami Posner’s The Mute. Robert Forster’s cameo as Murphy is enlightening. I love what he reveals. Editor Andrew Hulme tricks you with his changing time and place shifts with crafty cutting. Cinematographer Peter Sova’s stunning wide shots, beautiful close-up shots, cool blocking in medium shots, and depth of field are all very neat visually. Sylvain Bernier’s striking lighting and production designer François Séguin’s colorful sets all look fabulous. Composer J. Ralph’s shadowy sounding score can be dark and menacing or light and playful. Costume designer Odette Gadoury’s luxurious tailored suits and long coats look awesome on every guy. Hairstyling by Gerald Quist, Angel De Angelis, Christine Larocque, Pina Rizzi, and Dominique Dupras give Josh Hartnett his coolest haircut in any movie he’s gotten. In short, Lucky Number Slevin is a blast of gunshots, kissing, and mysterious identities. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/16/25 Full Review Alain E Very smart and entertaining with many bad guys who suffer unfortunate endings. Bruce Willis, with all his faculties intact, is forgiven because he took pity on a little boy. On Freevee with minimal interruptions. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/01/25 Full Review Rob A Josh Hartnett spent way too much time in a bath towel, and Ben Kingsley's camped-up performance was beneath him, but Lucy Liu was sweet as pie and the plot was clever. Director Paul McGuigan makes good use of legends Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman; at the end of the day what we have here is a fun popcorn flick to kick back to. Great ending btw.
