During his farewell address to West Point, General Douglas MacArthur (Gregory Peck) looks back on his storied military career. Beginning with his legendary promise, "I shall return," at the outset of the Battle of Bataan and continuing through his troops' subsequent successes in the South Pacific, the film also touches on his anti-Communist activities following the war and his role in the rebuilding of postwar Japan, until his 1952 ouster by President Harry S. Truman (Ed Flanders).

Mark B Great acting by Peck . They nailed Truman also it just suffers from too many speeches by MacAuthor and rushes into WWII with not enough context. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Blu B It's Not Bad honestly. It's overall half decently made and even though it was made in 77' it feels like this could've come out in 50's made by John Ford with the overall tone. (For better or for Worse) It has a very ok start but the buildup to his return in the Phillipines is actually pretty good and the best part. But once the Korean War starts it isn't able to hold that momentum. There isn't as much action, the music is barely used, and it's just alot of standing around talking more than anything. The battles have good effects and production value along with stock footage, but it only lasts for a few seconds before we cut back. It cuts way too quickly from the action. Also, while isn't bad and is more interesting at certain times than others, the supporting cast is just ok. All the other generals, politicians, they all just blend in. Even his family is barely ever explored and arguably his wife is the most forgettable part. In all other great epics as interesting as the main character who it's about is, they always also have interesting supporting characters around him as well. This doesn't have that. It also just throws us into the action of WWII immediately without really explaining anything which means you kind of have to know about the Pacific War and Korean War beforehand as this doesn't really do a good job explaining the backdrop. The direction as well isn't that inspired at times, the lighting is dull, some weird camerawork every now and than, but a cool scene every no and than too. More than anything this feels like a movie showing MacArthur's role in WWII & Korean War rather than about MacArthur himself. It's not a documentary style feel but it just doesn't do that good a job of explaining who he was beyond the headlines. Anyone who is a die hard fan of Peck or the subject matter may check this out. There are better war biopics though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/06/24 Full Review Nol P I like this movie overall and I finally watched again, (thanks to the power of the dvd!) Most of these good war films are almost impossible to find on any platform so I am glad to have had a copy on dvd to watch when I wanted. I feel that this movie would have been even better with a bit longer running time and as well some stamped dates on screen during the presentation to some of the battles and timelines. Agree? Gregory Peck was one fine actor! The director could have done a bit more I do believe. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review kevin f While not as good a film as Patton, it's a more balanced view of its subject. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review delysid d sadly, this movie makes no sense, i like gregory peck but this movie pales in comparison to patton or even peck's own pork chop hill Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/10/22 Full Review Audience Member Douglas MacArthur is the most overrated American historical figure, the fact is that he is not even a successful general.
