Critics Consensus

Woody Allen's sharpest film in years, Match Point is a taut, philosophical thriller about class and infidelity.

David Ansen Newsweek The change of locale from New York to London has done Woody Allen a world of good. As has oft been said, Match Point is his best movie since ... fill in the blank. Mar 13, 2018 Full Review Victoria Segal New Statesman His first film set in London, it boasts a young, pretty, something-for-everyone cast. As enter-tainment, however, it just slams limply into the net every time. Sep 26, 2017 Full Review Nell Minow Movie Mom Rated: C Feb 18, 2012 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film Match Point is melodramatic, with the whole story turned on a set of unlikely and ludicrous eventualities, which Allen only too eager to call “luck”. The story makes almost zero sense, and it works neither as a drama-thriller, nor as a romance-comedy. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 2, 2024 Full Review Michael Calleri Niagara Gazette "Match Point” is a great movie, which showcases Woody Allen’s ability to offer insights into the human condition. He reveals telling insights about people who need to be brutal in order to protect what they consider important. Apr 30, 2023 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter A glorious ride, with touches of Hitchcock, Patricia Highsmith and Woody Allen sprinkled through a film whose panoramic views of contemporary London are the next-best thing to a budget-weekend escape flight. D P This story made me absolutely mad! I was thoroughly into it, but I can't give it any higher rating simply for making my blood boil. There are some stories where you simply can't remove your own morals when judging a piece of art, and this did it for me. Scarlett's character particularly frustrated me to no end. I wanted her to stop being so dumb. I was shouting instructions to her throughout the movie. A whole sociopath got away with it, and I don't need to revisit this ever again. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/15/25 Full Review joe d As a fan of Woody Allen films ...it's a very unusual film in so much as it very much appealed to audiences & critics outside the UK but strangely didn't hit the mark here in the UK where it was filmed & set in London with a host of well known British actors. I suppose its the very example of the saying that the US & UK is divided by a common language. It was like a foreign movie even though it wasn't. Not at all my cup of tea. Which somehow explains the problem. Very flat...no jokes...didn't get it right. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review Audience Member Deeply deceptive with greed, lust, gluttony, wrath, envy entwined throughout the film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Tim M Woody Allen's comedic roots show to Match Point's detriment, but another finely stringed screenplay brings it together in the end. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Lars N Really enjoyed this one. Jonathan Reyes is a particularly great casting choice as there is something off-putting about him from the get go. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Marc Z This is a really well done Woody Allen movie about a British Tennis pro whose life and social circle becomes fascinated by his interest in a beautiful, young American. Scarlett Johansson is perfect in this role. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is great in the starring role. This film is a usual departure for Allen in that it takes place in London, as opposed to NYC. This film is on the more serious pallet, Allen. It is not comedic. Regardless, it is a good look at how an affinity for the opposite sex can, sometimes, become so overwhelming that it becomes such a strong fixation that it derails other aspects of one's life. Is it Love, or obsession? This film explores the question nicely and we can't help but wonder how personal that question is for Allen. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews
