Grade schoolers Melody (Tracy Hyde) and Daniel (Mark Lester) are completely earnest in their desire to wed one another. Unfortunately, no one seems to understand the ardor of their loving bond. Their parents and teachers find the marriage proposition ridiculous, and Daniel's closest pal, Ornshaw (Jack Wild), doesn't want to lose his buddy to a girl. However, the mischievous Ornshaw eventually warms to the idea, and helps Daniel and Melody escape the cruel clutches of the adults.

David K With it's vivid 1970s rugged English backdrop, Melody often feels more like a documentary than a film. There are some good performances from Jack Wild for example, although for me Mark Lester is notably ineffectual as Daniel. Perhaps because of its amateurish documentary feel and obvious storyline, Melody largely fails to persuade me to care about the fate of its characters. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/25 Full Review Beatriz M This must be one of the most beautifull movies I watched when I was about the same age that of the protagonists. A movie that portrays schools kids with all the day-to-day domestic problems but, from the children's perspective--adults not getting on, old age and dependency, poverty, learning problems, loyalty, and of course, love, justice and idealism. All topics and sentiments that appear absent in today's children movies, where cynicism mixed with world's problems (environment, gilt, distrust of adults, gender issues, teen's depression), place a very heavy burden on children. Children that are not better prepared to face the world because of that, but often hardener and sad. As I was looking for the film to share with the young ones I realised that it is not available. The 2 versions I found are of very poor quality. Would there be any streaming service be willing to consider this gem? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review Audience Member A film about growing and knowing. Even pupil love can bring out the biggest things. This is young actress Tracy Hyde's first feature film starring next to the stars of Oliver Twist, Jack Wild and Mark Lester. Danny and Tom are schoolmates. Melody is the eye of Danny's affection. The both of them fall deeply in love despite being so young. They even want to wed as soon as possible. But everybody else doesn't grasp their unique bond. Tom even thinks his best friend is crazy going forward with such a thing fearing he'll lose him to love. As you'd expect the adults aren't too keen about the idea either always putting obstacles in their way like school teachings, future prospects, career paths instead of letting them be kids. Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom came to my mind watching this. It's got that whole young prepubescent love thing going on against big odds. But the whole main premise doesn't start until an hour into the film and the boy and girl barely exchange a sentence with one another. Feels like they put it off for a while. Still this soundtrack by The Bee Gees is very good, the kids are extremely well-talented for their age, and the movie looks at the difficulties of kids on the road to growing up in the world. Why is it so difficult to be happy young or old?, can you really love someone for so long in a short amount of time?, how can we recognize our priorities when all we want is to be happy? Childhood friendship, conflict, and romance are gathered into a wistful evocation. A cute example of puppy love that grows as fast as these children do. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Marcelo J My favourite movie. Forever. It takes you back to school times. To innocence. To very nice times (in my case). Music score is beatiful too. The opening song ('In the morning', by The Bee Gees) is full of poetry, images, feelings. Is a very good introduction for the images we´ll find and we´ll love so much in this film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Possibly one of if not my favourite movie of my early teenage years back in the early 70's. This movie has a soundtrack of original Bee Gees and even an iconic Crosby Stills Nash and Young song that a generation used as their anthem. Today this movie still moves me in a cute, young love, innocent slice of life that (to me) was very typical British school life in the 60's/70's. Jack Wild at his peak.
