On the surface, the Bowers are a typical upper-middle-class suburban family, but 15-year-old daughter Susan (Viveka Davis) has begun hanging with a bad crowd. Though surgeon Frank (George Segal) and homemaker Helen (Stockard Channing) notice some small behavioral changes, it's not until Susan has a serious accident that the parents realize that their seemingly innocent daughter has developed a drug problem. J M Reviewing TV movies from the 70s and 80s is not an easy task. So much has changed in the ensuing decades, and what once appeared powerful and relevant often now feels like a bad After School Special. Sadly, a good chuck of this 1985 TV movie falls into this category. Even seasoned veterans like Segal and Channing feel adrift when surrounded by an ocean of bad direction and a screenplay that feels like a series of bumper stickers. That being said, there are moments here and there that actually transcend the general mediocrity of the production. Channing has a very small monologue toward the end that is so beautifully written and performed that it almost feels jarring. And I normally don't give extra credit for good intentions, but this movie really is trying to make a statement about the dangers of drug abuse. It's a very watchable movie, and I had no intentions of turning it off before it ended, but sadly much of its watchability is for the sake of camp rather than transfixion. - Jeff Marshall, Movie Blogger (Facebook) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Audience Member Thank you to the writers of NOT MY KID.... for endless laughter over a joint, for quotes in my high school yearbook, for never letting me down when I am having a bad day to watch scenes on YOUTUBE, and for the 90 + minutes of Catholic school when I had the pleasure of watching your movie. To my dismay, no other comments have been written about "Not My Kid". This seems crazy to me because I am sure I am not the only one out there who has seen this movie in high school? " Not My Kid" is the "Reefer Maddness" of the 1980's. To do justice to Rotten Tomatoes, the actors were horrible, the script was filled with anti-drug propoganda, and the film was a total mess. My favorite scene went something like this ..... " Now why are you here Susan ... Well I did Pot and Alcohol.... what else... okay well I did PCP, Uppers, Downers, Cocaine, Heroin, but I never shot up ( and then it goes to a girl who looks at the lead character like she is a total wimp) ... okay I shot up once..... WHAT THE F ? In all honesty, the only part of this movie I remember was the title. I had so many good times in my youth referring to this movie, laughing at this movie, bringing the movie up in class to make fun of the movie, and now a few years later, drunken conversations with old friends about this movie. NOT MY KID--- Thank you for being a part of my life ; you did me no good, but I sure get a good laugh when i think of you! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
