      Critics Consensus

Mia Wasikowska puts in a nuanced performance but nobody else, actors and directors included, are capable of finding a compelling angle beneath the twee veneer.

Audience Member Portland looks so pretty in here. French nouvelle vague meets Americana. Expect walks in the cemetery, thrift shop clothes, old big haunted houses, Halloween nights, idling around railway tracks Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Merely passes the time Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member F 7.7 [Gus Van Sant] Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Its plot is course but Mia's performance lights the movie. She was casted as a lead role in 'Alice in Wonderland' already but was not so much establish when shooting the 'Restless'. She looks dignified like Jennifer Lawrence as I saw her in the 'Winter Borne'. She must be a rising star. Henry Hopper is a son of Denis Hopper. His performance is not bad as well as Ryo Kase who performs as a ghost of a Kamikaze pilot. The movie's first-time screenwriter Jason Lew and co-producer Bryce Dallas Howard, a daughter of Ron Howard attended New York University together and it was there that Lew first wrote the story as a play. Howard, who had acted in plays with Lew, got a peek at the story and encouraged him to write it as a screenplay. The movie is set in Portland and begins with 'Two of Us' by Beatles. It creates unique atmosphere with Mia's 60's European fashions. Thoughts of: -a boy who cannot accept his parents' death -a girl s who is given 3 months to live and -a Kamikaze pilot who died without declaration of love cross and they compliment each other and solve missing part. It's filled with young and fresh sensation. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member A convincing on-screen couple gives us a look into grief. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought this was brilliant, so enjoyable, different..not ur usaul storey...it would beat fault it your stars any day, (theres 1 or so hours i will never get back!) Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) The downward curve of Gus Van Sant's career continues with this awful slice of morbid whimsy. Rated: 1/5 Oct 21, 2011 Full Review Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch If you haven't seen a wasting disease in real life, you might think "Restless" is romantic. If you have, you might diagnose it as terminally cute. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 21, 2011 Full Review Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) It's not for everyone, but for me, it works. Rated: 3/5 Oct 20, 2011 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter Combining magical elements - Enoch is assisted by the ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot - this one projects an irreverent spirit and may appeal to fans of Anthony Minghella's Truly, Madly, Deeply. Jun 10, 2020 Full Review Stephen Saito Moveable Fest The film can't feel as natural, given its script's adherence to a well-worn formula. Still, it does take on a lightheaded, dreamlike quality that makes it gently romantic. Jan 9, 2019 Full Review Kelly Jane Torrance Washington Examiner It might be a meta-commentary on the characters -- but it feels far too earnest for that.
