Jeffrey P Keeps you guessing as it sets itself up to disappoint or surprise
and it kinda does both. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/12/23 Full Review Audience Member A couple go off to stay at a secluded house to recover from a tragic event. When an injured stranger collapses nearby, they take him in only to have him inform them of an impending danger back in civilization and they must barricade themselves inside. Cue danger and mistrust and be paranoia. Pretty decent thriller mostly due to the cast which features Thandie Newton, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Bell. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review the s This is a movie that had genuine potential; a situation where they had an entire island and old, isolated house to create an easy, creepy environment. And that's half the battle with a movie. The other half, however, is the part where this film fails and fails horribly: the writing. Spoiler alert: Whatever the writer had in mind with the whole epidemic thing, it fell flat. It came out of left field, there was ample time for the couple to be warned about it from the mainland
not even the most rapid virus spreads and kills so fast that there is no time to report it on the news. Then the (OMG!) plot twist that the guy was infected and he was trying to keep it from spreading (somehow he gave it to her husband but despite living with them both, she didn't get it?) Just an absolute mess of writing and plot development. Some high school level skill at play here which rendered the movie an unwatchable mess of boring pseudo-twists and anticlimactic parts that ultimately added nothing and couldn't save what was an already ruined movie. Waste of time. Quite literally. Despite the beautiful landscape, this isn't worth the 90 minutes you'll never get back if you decide to watch it. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I liked the concept and the acting here. I don't know why I'm giving it such a low score then-- perhaps because there's just so little here. Not much to chew on here, really. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member The story wasn't bad, and I love Cillian Murphy; but it just came across so blandly. There was no chemistry between the characters, emotion was either flat or overly dramatic. It was a lot like a mediocre student film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review dave j Co-written and directed by Carl Tibbetts with Kate (Thandie Newton) and Martin (Cicilian Murphy) secluding to the desolated island they used to go to on their vacation for the purpose of rekindling their marriage. As soon as the electric generator goes out, and the couple make attempts to contact owner of the isolated resort it is then a third party comes to the picture who is the Jamie Bell character. At this point viewers suspect the Jamie Bell character has something to do with it but we don't know what until the very end as well as who is this character the couple has saved. Spoil As it turns out the Jamie Bell character was initally a felon who was given 2 choices- either go straight to prison or to be used as a guinea pig at a military hospital where experiments are conducted on. And when he choose to be a guinea pig, he unknowingly infected Kate's husband Martin who is slowly dying. And with a barrel pointed directly at Jack (Jamie Bell) she threatens him to contact air base, and they tell them to come back since according to them they claim there's a vaccination, but it was really a lie. They just wanted to know where he is located so that they can drill him. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Michael Nordine Slant Magazine Retreat's wheels are constantly spinning, but they're not always taking us anywhere. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 24, 2011 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard A well-shot and directed telling of a claustrophobic tale which turns from thriller to horror story by the end. Only if you can't suspend your disbelief will it fail to keep you watching. Rated: 3/5 Oct 14, 2011 Full Review Empire Magazine Excellent performances from the cast elevate this otherwise slightly flawed a hokey interloper story. Rated: 3/5 Oct 14, 2011 Full Review Stephen Saito Moveable Fest "Retreat" would actually work better as a play since it has a limited setting, four characters at most and director Carl Tibbetts would be less tempted to amp up a heavy-handed score. Jan 8, 2019 Full Review Daniel Green CineVue Ultimately scuppered by a weak, unimaginative script and three uninspired central performances. Rated: 2/5 Dec 1, 2018 Full Review Amy Curtis We Got This Covered Retreat sports some high-caliber actors in a claustrophobic home-invasion thriller a la Straw Dog that offers up some truly thrilling moments.
