Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The pieces just fit together too nicely to be even moderately dismissed, Road Games an intoxicating, adrenaline-fueled thriller that's as brutal as it is invigorating. Rated: 3/4 Aug 15, 2016 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Though the inspiration here is clearly Hitchcockian, the movie's vibe is so tongue-in-cheek as to be weightless. Mar 10, 2016 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com Yes, you can enjoy Road Games even if you aren't a gorehound. I wish I could recommend Road Games beyond that though, since all roads lead to a twist ending that you can kinda-sorta make out from a mile off. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 4, 2016 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens First-time feature writer/director Abner Pastoll proves he's anything but, with the Hitchcockian-styled thriller road Games. Nov 5, 2019 Full Review Heather Wixson Daily Dead Some may find Road Games a bit convoluted at times, but for me, the story's perplexing nature is so methodically purposeful that I can't help but tip my hat to Pastoll, who manages to create an intensely fun and often unsettling cinematic conundrum. Rated: 4/5 Dec 21, 2016 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Though its tendency to whimsy means it's not quite as tightly plotted as it needs to be, this charismatic little thriller still manages to punch above its weight. Audience Member An annoying movie. For one, because of the language, and two, because of the idiot protagonists. First, just imagine a movie where everyone, even the bad guys, is so stupid that most of them accidentally kill themselves; yep, even the evil Frenchman who ends up tripping and impaling himself. Even though almost everyone in the movie speaks English, at least half of the movie is in French. Yes, it takes place in France but it’s even more annoying that individual conversations go back and forth between English and French. Just make the movie in one language, preferably English. It doesn’t have to be in French for me to understand it takes place in France. The next painful thing is to witness these brainless wonders as the protagonists. The guy finds the girl tied up in a room with literally DOZENS of knives. Even though he uses one of the knives to cut the ropes and free her, NEITHER of them bother to grab a knife and take it with them to defend themselves!!! Just STUPID! Do you think there is actually a person on this planet who would do such a thing?!?! I doubt it. The writers and director should be blacklisted from ever working in film ever again. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/23 Full Review Hugo The element of surprise and unpredictability were not enough for this to be a satisfying movie. I would recommend other horror road movies such as Tailgate. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/07/22 Full Review Liam D A Hitchcocken Thriller that keeps ramping up the tension with fantastic performances and shocking moments Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/17/22 Full Review dennis d A so-so movie with a very interesting and not predictable ending. But overall -- I was disappointed. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely love this movie. Using both the English and French language (and as someone who cannot speak French) I love how my journey as an audience member mirrors that of protagonist Jack (Andrew Simpson) - being kept in the dark with what is going on a critical moments. Stand out performances from the entire ensemble. A wonderful directorial debut from Abner Pastoll. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Some of the most cliche dialogue with more holes in its plot than an orgy in Sodom. I sincerely started questioning whether or not it was a parody about 15 minutes in. The scenes that are suppose to be intense and thrilling, remind me of a low grade peek-a-boo or hide and seek; it never actually feels like there's any real danger. It's a shame, the actors did a fine job, but the comically terrible direction and dialogue overshadows their skills. The entire movie collapses on itself at the end when their method of protecting someone makes absolute no human logical sense. I also refuse to believe the same guy who spoke and understood some French throughout the entire movie, doesn't understand any of it in the end. I feel like he definitely would have understood enough of that crazy bonkers confession. If you're looking to watch something that seemed like it was written, produced, directed, and edited by Tommy Wiseau, give this a try. Otherwise, skip this and watch a better movie under IFC instead.
