Audience Member The authenticity of the facts displayed throughout is unquestionable. That is precisely the point. Put into different words: Weiss' immaculate direction does not only allow to build a perfectly vivid WWII Prague as a multicultural city, but also constructs a plot devoid of any direct political commentary against the regime. That's something equally odd as it is outstanding, considering the times and the country in which it was made. Instead, actions are shown as how they happened (even throughout the world during the war). In the end, then, we have to fully human protagonists verbally labeled by their social origins, but emotionally joined by an indestructible force: love. A cat and mouse story which is clumsily handled at times, yet it is a film to be felt for, and more so for the tragic ending which is already evident through the overall tone of the film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Weiss studies two tragic figures in the midst of WWII in Czechoslovakia,a Jewish girl and an "Aryan" as the girl decides to call him before she gets to know his warm yet brave personality. The reason why this forsaken by the public film wasn't met with any accolades at the time it was released: critics don't often look beyond the academic rules and this is not an ordinary theatrical valley of kings and queens....it's an event,a glance,a prejudiced antagonism and it could have happened no matter the place and the time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the best love story I've ever seen ! Sensitive, gentle, lovely, romantic, tragic. The two lead actors are perfect, the face of an actress is beautifully haunting .... it lingers in my mind. Beautiful black and white photography. The movie itself is brilliant,it made me cry.
