Eric Henderson Slant Magazine Romero's own Belle du Jour. Rated: 3/4 Nov 3, 2005 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault Surprisingly powerful, it’s further proof of Romero’s true identity as a social satirist using horror as his vehicle. Rated: A- Nov 29, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Season of the Witch first made the rounds under the titles Jack's Wife and Hungry Wives, and either is a better representation of the film's content than Season of the Witch. Sabrina F Worth it for the last ten minutes alone, but the rest of the film is a slog to get through. Nevertheless, the classic "punchy" Romero ending won't have quite the impact that is does without seeing the rest of the film. You can skim through the first 30 minutes or so pretty quickly and pick up where Joan goes to the store to buy items to cast a spell. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review martin f It's not the horror movie you are expecting from Romero or the title. The movie is more about the drama of a woman tired of her submissive live and then VERY slowly trying witchcraft. It definitely feels amateurish at time as the actors are not very great and the editing feels weird. The sound design is particularly strange, and sometimes all your focus will be on the very out of the place soundtrack. There are some few very strong debates between the main protagonist and the antagonist Greg. Greg doesn't care about institutions and think that everyone would be free if they follow him but he is also very arrogant which give us a good antagonist. Despite being not very subtle arguments and having a (very) few horror scenes, and other horror movies reference, the movie fails to be captivating or to be really feminism as it was intended. Also, the main actress has great nails, I tell you that because she constantly puts them in the focus. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review marco b Obscure George Romero film about a woman who is trying to break away from her mundane life and decides to become a witch. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A spiritual sequel of sorts to Romero's first sordid nightmare about ordinary people trapped in a house, situating suburban housewives of the 70s as the real living dead, barely animate yet craving flesh. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Season of the Witch (also known as Hungry Wives and Jack's Wife) was released in several different cuts in the years after its original release. I watched the 89-minute version: a tense, experimental thriller, which questions the possibility of Something More. Its cinematography, editing, and soundscape are a blend of suffocating suburban realism - full of jumbled voices and awkward silences - and hallucinatory dreamscapes characterized by jarring cuts, wide angle lenses, and bizarre sounds. As Joan turns to her belief in the supernatural as a release from her mundane existance, the line between the two worlds blurs in this tight, expressionist exploration of psyche, society, and faith. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Bored housewife finds a new way to get her kicks in witchcraft and cheating with her daughter's boyfriend. It's obviously a feminist and female empowerment film, but it doesn't help when you can't stand the protagonist and see her for the flake she is.
