Audience Member This movie has a lot of problems. It was only mildly entertaining. The story is weak. It is full of plot holes and is poorly filmed. We see very little of the city. There are a few distant vistas of the harbor and new looking apartment buildings. The street scenes are primarily shot directly upon the characters. The surrounding environment is barely shown. The rest of the scenes are shot indoors (eg. apartment rooms, bar/nite club rooms, some parts of parks and alley ways). The viewer really does not get a sense of the city. It involves some Caucasian teenage boys, born and living in Hong Kong. It is set in the summer weeks before Hong Kong was turned over to the mainland Chinese government. The people of Hong Kong were greatly concerned about what would happen to their city. The fight scenes were poorly filmed. They did not look real. There was no talk about exit visas or even refugee smuggling possibilities. A lot of details were left hanging. And, the movie had an amateurish look to the whole of it. The principal character is a 16 yr old boy, who looks younger. He writes a journal. He has a good male friend who is just as maladjusted as he is; maybe more so. Neither of these guys was a convincing actor. They both suffer from teenage angst. They both smoke, drink, and use street drugs. Our hero's parents seem to be decent people. Yet our lead character suffers greatly emotionally; wanting to leave HK. It is not clear why. His friend comes up with a scheme to sell drugs to other, white, ex-pat teens, like themselves. The scheme involves working for a nasty Chinese gangster and his nephew. The hero's brother died a few years earlier in this same man's employment. It's probably not a very good career move. The third principal character of note is a beautiful young hooker with "a heart of gold". She appears a few years older than our guy. She is also way more attractive. Yet, inexplicably, she shows some interest in the younger guy who is totally messed up and going nowhere. And, they develop a relationship. Go figure. Later, our hero decides to steal money from the gangster to finance his escape with his new found "love". It's never a good idea to steal from a ruthless, murderous, gangster; who knows who you are and where you live. An ending is vaguely hinted at. But, we are left to our own guesses about what might happen to all the principal characters. It was a disappointing trip to the flics. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
