Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com There is no monster at the end of this story, only boundless regret, and tedium. Rated: 0/4 Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Justin Lowe Hollywood Reporter Temple comes off as more of a half-hearted attempt at exploiting typical J-horror themes than an actual homage to the Japanese genre. Aug 31, 2017 Full Review Kimber Myers Los Angeles Times It fails to provide any real scares and adheres to well-worn tropes without a fresh twist. Aug 31, 2017 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review I almost wish the film had been less of a sketch and more of a fully formed idea, giving the characters more room to develop and the temple's legends more color and depth. Still, what's here has a handful of worthy moments of terror and intrigue. May 13, 2020 Full Review Josh Goller Spectrum Culture Makes little effort to transcend threadbare scary movie clichés while trotting out listless J-horror tropes Rated: 1/5 Jul 20, 2019 Full Review C.H. Newell Father Son Holy Gore A solid example of how to do an Americans travelling abroad sub-genre flick that doesn't fumble around in Asian culture simply for fumbling's sake. victor b Disappointed ending...very2 disappointed.. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/23 Full Review Liam D While it's use of Japanese Culture is interesting but it's in a incredibly bland horror movie Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/17/22 Full Review Audience Member Adoravelmente assustador, pena que a introdução é longa, e a parte horripilante é deixada para os momentos finais... Aquele filme que é tranquilo, de boas, a gente só evita assistir de noite por precaução... Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Screw this movie, and the people who made it. SPOILERS ABOUND. I've been through a series of bad movies, and this one pisses me off the most. At first, you think it'll be good. The atmosphere seems nice, it starts off with an interrogation scene involving someone who looks mangled to hell. It doesn't take long for questions to start coming up, such as: why was the mention of the 'accident' in the very beginning there, if nothing was to come of it later? It didn't foreshadow anything, or lead to anything later. The friend could've easily just wanted go to Japan, and we wouldn't have learned about his brother. Secondly, the lady whom the boyfriend was clearly cheating with. They question the main narrator about her, "who is she?" All we get from it? "That's a good question." And then it's never mentioned again. Thirdly, did they really want us to be surprised by the twist? They did everything to convince us that it WAS the twist! Examples: the kid pops up randomly in two very different locations (accompanied by spooky sounds), says weird stuff, and is NEVER acknowledged by the rest of the cast. Of COURSE he was a friggin' ghost. So when it was 'revealed' you're left sitting there feeling like you were insulted to the nth degree, because the makers of the film thought you were so stupid that you wouldn't have figured it out if they didn't point it out to you. Japan has such a rich world of folklore and monsters, and yet they couldn't even pull off the monster design right, nor make it interesting or stand out from other stereotypical horror monsters. It appears, growls, extends its fingers creepily, and that's it. They made a big deal out of the temple, but I feel so disappointed. They could've made it so interesting, but it's like the makers thought all you need are murderous ghosts, and suddenly it's so scary. There's this very cool visual (told, not shown) of a guy holding his own eyeballs in his hands, and it leaves you thinking 'wow there must be something really screwed up at the temple!" There isn't. And that's the most disappointing thing of all. It's so odd to me that the movie is not even an hour and a half long, yet they chose to make most of it the main characters' journey to get to the temple. The actual scary stuff feels rushed. The build up to the temple would've been fine had the film been longer. Then there's this stupid drama involving maybe a love triangle and a secret, but they don't amount to anything or add anything substantial to the story. The ending is abrupt and unsatisfying, and the interrogation scenes seemed so important, yet could've well have been left out, and you wouldn't miss anything. This movie pisses me off at how poorly it handled everything, and how little it thinks of the audience's intelligence. I wish someone would rewrite the whole thing, because Japanese culture and lore is so rich and awesome, and someone needs to do it real justice. In the meantime, and I'll say it again: screw this movie! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Up there with one of the worst films i have ever seen, i would honestly rather have my arse cheeks ironed than watch it again Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A man with a torn off face is being asked questions about what happened in an ancient temple.
