Audience Member Very decent TV version. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Lush Budapest locales and a subtly creepy Phantom in the person of Schell with a perfect voice for the role highlight this tv-movie. Its 1983, so of course it stars Micheal York (I'm sure Richard Chambermaid was just too busy) and Jane Seymour and both perform admirably as they usually do. The mystery of the Phantom is completely thrown out with his back story featuring in the opening of the film. What's left is the bare bones of the classic story, although a bit over orchestrated with music. Several scenes of the Phantom lurking about sound like they are imitating the Jaws score, making the scene unintentionally silly. The masked ball is there, simply because it has to be, not because it seems natural to the story, although the Phantom in his costume ball outfit is very impressive. With a Phantom movie, its all about the ending and the title character, and Schnell does a great job with his deep measured voice. His mask is one of the creepier ones to show up in these adaptions. Nothing can top the original Chaney make-up, but Schnell's demented take on the Phantom, especially his "a ghost who loves you, and ghost who adores you" is chilling to the bone. The set of the Phantom's lair is quite atmospheric. I'm looking forward to this being released on DVD one day soon.
