What to Know

Critics Consensus

So rote that its star is overshadowed by his wig, The Forger offers nary a thrill nor a scintilla of suspense that couldn't be overpowered by a decent basic-cable drama.

Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times What is happening! If you check out "The Forger," you might well find yourself saying that time and again, as the entertainingly terrible performances keep piling up while the plot dares you not to chuckle at the audacity of it all. Rated: 1.0 Apr 26, 2015 Full Review Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com It never for a single moment makes a plausible case for its own existence. Rated: 2/4 Apr 24, 2015 Full Review Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times In attempting to spin out its competing storylines, the crime drama "The Forger" never quite gets a handle on either one. Apr 24, 2015 Full Review David Parkinson Radio Times Even though this is far from good, it does have some disarming moments. Rated: 2/5 Jul 22, 2024 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Common Sense Media The plot is a little lackluster -- the climactic heist isn't very climactic -- but director Philip Martin creates a strong sense of place and a strong sense of community among the characters. Rated: 3/5 Nov 13, 2016 Full Review Marija Djurovic Cairo360 The Forger is an uninspired and flat crime-drama that, despite its relatively sellable premise and solid casting, just doesn't come together. Larry L This a great movie. Only disappoinment are the poor reviews . Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/12/24 Full Review Nathan W I almost wrote this one off too, but it really grew on me. I mean, there were some legitimately good performances from the main cast. Christopher Plummer was intense and passionate as he always is. A young Tye Sheridan, still cutting his teeth in the business, was surprisingly talented and moving. And John Travolta played the grieving father role rather convincingly. I will say that he was the weakest of the main trio, and his accent was a little distracting... And annoying. (I don't know why Travolta always has to do weird voices in these lower end movies, but it didn't sound Bostonian like it was supposed to). The overall story wasn't bad either, but some aspects of it worked better than others. You know, the police stuff lacked believability and was completely unremarkable. Almost didn't factor into the story at all. The art stuff wasn't the most interesting, but at least it was integral to the plot. The big heist at the end wasn't the most elaborate or exciting thing you ever seen, but they did the best with what they had. Where this movie really worked though, what I wish had been a bigger part of the film, was the family stuff. Without giving too much away, there was some heavy subject matter at the center of this film. Things that I initially disliked because they didn't make sense, came into focus. It added a measure of likability and relatability to our characters that wasn't there before. There were a number of emotional and touching scenes between a father and his son, who he would have done anything to make happy. I even got a little choked up at the very end, which almost never happens to me. So while the overall execution may not have been the best, this movies' heart was in the right place. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/02/24 Full Review Dirk D I found this movie to be most enjoyable. Even though the family was broken, the father still loved his son and found a way make him happy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review KB B I thought it was a pretty entertaining film with decent acting and storyline. Ty Sheridan was really good. Travolta's wig...one star. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/26/24 Full Review James Like usual rotten tomatoes gave this a horrible score so I had to watch it ! Loved this movie ! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Alfonso M Una película sobre el amor filial, la importancia de la familia, y lo importante de vivir cada día como si fuera el último Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/10/21 Full Review Read all reviews
