Mixing multiple genres, The Gorge makes for a surprisingly endearing romance until its action-thriller obligations steer proceedings back onto a more predictable path.

Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (LAist) Two rules: don't show me your monster and don't explain it, because whatever you say is going to be silly. They broke both rules. May 8, 2025 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (LAist) It's a tough balance to strike and I don't think the sci-fi part works as well as [the romance]. The two [actors] have a lot of chemistry and look great together, the film looks great, and the score is great. May 8, 2025 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News The special effects are quite good, but “The Gorge” doesn’t scale the goofy heights in a rollercoaster ride way that it thinks it does, stalling out with a hackneyed ending that makes you shrug your shoulders and want to move on to something better. Rated: 2/4 Mar 3, 2025 Full Review Marta Medina mundoCine Scott Derrickson has crafted in The Gorge what feels like an adaptation of a video game that doesn’t exist, one that shines especially in its first half and in its impossible love story, brought to life by a dream team of actors. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Aug 22, 2025 Full Review Maxance Vincent FlickSided Scott Derrickson elevates The Gorge through its artful visuals and a thrilling techno-heavy score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, even if its storytelling frequently stumbles throughout its 128-minute runtime. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 25, 2025 Full Review Dave Giannini Geek Vibes Nation For a movie like this to excel, the creators have to thread a very specific needle. The romance has to spark. The monsters have to be terrifying. The mystery needs to be fully engaging. Unfortunately, The Gorge is halfway there in all three facets. Rated: 5.5/10 Jul 19, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Donavin D With an interesting premise and solid performances from Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, the film manages to stay afloat thanks to its leads. Unfortunately, it quickly falls into a gorge of its own with a predictable story, weak monster design, and a forgettable supporting cast. Teller and Taylor-Joy remain likable and grounded, playing characters who are written smartly enough — with only a few missteps — to feel believable. Their romance isn’t electric, but it feels earned, which helps anchor the story. The film takes a while to find its rhythm but picks up once the action starts, though the pacing ends up feeling uneven, almost as if it was originally supposed to be a limited series. The creatures are fine, I guess but uninspired, resembling Pirates of the Caribbean villains more than terrifying original designs. In a world where we are spoiled with monster creations like The Last of Us, it’s hard not to feel underwhelmed. Meanwhile, the supporting cast functions purely as plot devices, each reduced to a single purpose and devoid of much personality. At its core, the film had the potential to be something more. With succinct pacing, stronger monster design, and a more well-developed twist, it could have been truly engaging. As it stands, the leads carry it well enough, but the film ultimately feels too shallow to pull us fully into its depths. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/27/25 Full Review Arron B Very impressed with this film, a brilliant story line and brilliant actor! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/26/25 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely superb. This brings back prime-era movie creation with a modern touch and technology. No over acting and over editing. Raw human emotion; not fake emotions and romance. The action, romance, and decision making are acted and wrote exactly like how I’d imagine two people their age and skill set would act in this scenario almost to the point you’d forget they’re just “acting” and it’s all just a movie. Perfect film with a small team as well! Brilliant casting everything is just perfect, perfect, perfect. I felt so nostalgic while watching; it was a nice change of pace to see a well written film again where the characters actually feel real. Questionable choices made by the antagonists at the end of the film but that’s just it... The cherry on top. A truly happy ending as well for a fully satisfying watch. No nonsense cliffhangers, characters make real logical decisions and solve the problem realistically. I’ve seen this about 8 times now and I truly enjoy this film each time more than the last with each watch! Great sci-fi Romance film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/26/25 Full Review darrin j Superb film! Lots of action, light horror, humor and even romance! It's a worthy Emmy nominee! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/24/25 Full Review Łukasz T Surprisingly pleasant zombie movie. Especially as I don't really like zombie movies. Good, natural play from actors, happy ending and some action. Overall 82/100 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/21/25 Full Review Romas M “The Gorge” (2025) is an entertaining science fiction, romance action flick. It has very cool concept, good production design, two highly likable leads and plot that is as dumb as it’s involving. As a one from Lithuania i was very pleased to see Anya Taylor-Joy character to be a Lithuanian and hear my native language to be spoken and a big Hollywood movie (even if its a TV movie). But let’s get one thing out of the way - there was never ever in a history of Lithuania a woman named Drasa. In English Drasa imeans Courage. How many woman are named Courage..? Exactly! That said, this film is entertaining as a one evening watch - found it on Apple TV and was mildly entertaining by it. The concept is cool and unique here, but its believability is zero to none - it’s one of those films you do not think about logic. Seeing Sigourney Weaver on screen ever for short was and always will be a pleasure as i’m mega Aliens fan. Overall, The Gorge is a fun and mildly entertaining nonsense. The chemistry between two leads is great and it carries this flick together with cool concept. Just don’t take it seriously. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
