Critics Consensus

Mixing multiple genres, The Gorge makes for a surprisingly endearing romance until its action-thriller obligations steer proceedings back onto a more predictable path.

Two rules: don't show me your monster and don't explain it, because whatever you say is going to be silly. They broke both rules. Go to Full Review

It's a tough balance to strike and I don't think the sci-fi part works as well as [the romance]. The two [actors] have a lot of chemistry and look great together, the film looks great, and the score is great. Go to Full Review

The special effects are quite good, but “The Gorge” doesn’t scale the goofy heights in a rollercoaster ride way that it thinks it does, stalling out with a hackneyed ending that makes you shrug your shoulders and want to move on to something better. Go to Full Review

Scott Derrickson has crafted in The Gorge what feels like an adaptation of a video game that doesn’t exist, one that shines especially in its first half and in its impossible love story, brought to life by a dream team of actors. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Scott Derrickson elevates The Gorge through its artful visuals and a thrilling techno-heavy score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, even if its storytelling frequently stumbles throughout its 128-minute runtime. Go to Full Review

For a movie like this to excel, the creators have to thread a very specific needle. The romance has to spark. The monsters have to be terrifying. The mystery needs to be fully engaging. Unfortunately, The Gorge is halfway there in all three facets. Go to Full Review

Harleen Q @Harleen 11h It's a love story packaged as a science fiction movie which isn't really the best vehicle for a love story but you won't regret watching it. The set up is weak and old but once the romantic story comes into view the chemistry between our two heroes makes the movie entertaining in the way you'd want go to the movies for. I was surprised by the convincing albeit shallow premise for a happy ending that will leave you satisfied if you wanted to see a love story. See more Brian M @iMaki 1d This one was tough for me, because John Cusack is an obnoxious, arrogant leftwing lunatic. That aside, I liked the movie premise so press play! The first half was very good when these two lonely souls started flirting with signs across the gorge. Well, they buried any chance this movie had with a corny, awkward, ridiculous, poorly executed zombie apocalypse and B-rated special effects. In the end, we are left grimacing with the totally predictable reunion of the two lonely souls after they erased about 3000 plant people. By then, no one cared. The chick was cute as hell, so she gets 1 star out of the 1.5 stars I’ve begrudgingly awarded. I will say though, it would have gotten 4 stars had the movie ended an hour earlier. Oh well. See more David M 3d Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy are elite soldiers for hire each sent to spend a year in isolation guarding a huge gorge somewhere undisclosed, and forbidden from making contact with each other. Of course, they ignore that because this is a film, and sci-fi-horror shenanigans ensue. Large parts of the film - especially the first act - are dialogue-free, and that in itself makes this bolder than your average sci-fi/action horror film. The hidden truth is only gradually revealed, which is well handled, and the two lead performances are good enough to carry the film. The script sags under the weight of necessary exposition at times, and large parts of the film take place in not very well illuminated darkness, a blight that afflicts too much film and tv at the moment. But it's decently entertaining and despite a 2-hour plus run time, doesn't outstay its welcome. See more katerina P @kaylazomg 5d A thoroughly entertaining action romance with a twist. I wasn't sure if it would be good given the romantic angle, but I loved every minute of this movie. See more Jonathan K 5d Hoooooooowwwwww is it 62%? This was a banger. Forget the plot and the ending. The build up was worth the wait. Super great chemistry that felt refreshing to see. See more Read all reviews
