The tragic death of 21-year-old Grace Millane while on a solo holiday made headlines worldwide for her murderer's violent history and attitude towards women. That was illustrated during a 2019 trial, where her killer was found guilty after offering a so-called "rough sex" defense that Millane could not rebut, and her family had to hear in court. Jesse Kempson, dubbed the Tinder killer, was eventually found guilty of murder and sentenced to a life sentence, with 17 years in prison without parole. The Lie: The Murder of Grace Millane is set to present newly released CCTV footage and interviews that captures Millane's Tinder date before she was strangled to death and holds a mirror up to broader issues of violence against women in society.

Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's devastating. In some ways it felt like a violation... It left me feeling like I had watched a snuff film. Apr 5, 2024 Full Review Karl Puschmann New Zealand Herald With its extensive use of CCTV footage, The Lie meticulously and thoroughly presents its terrible truth. Sep 19, 2024 Full Review Graeme Tuckett Stuff.co.nz If the film's existence in any way speeds up a ban on the so-called "rough sex" defence, and helps to spare another family from having to sit through a trial in which that is deployed, then it will have achieved a great deal. Rated: 3.5/5 May 9, 2024 Full Review T.J. Callahan AWFJ.org Helena Coan's not only chillingly recounts the details leading to the death of Grace, the young and vibrant British tourist murdered in Australia, but also is meant to hold a mirror up to a society with a problem of violence towards women. Mar 31, 2024 Full Review Q.V. Hough Vague Visages "Part of the film’s effectiveness lies in the iceberg-style storytelling, which respects the audience’s intelligence by showing and addressing crime scene evidence without detailing the grisly specifics." Mar 29, 2024 Full Review Megan McLachlan Awards Daily Struggling to remember this particular news story? That’s an underlying point of this gripping documentary, that Millane’s murder sounds like so many other tragedies of “women doing things alone." [...] Coan’s doc reveals itself like a horror film. Lee G This gruelling movie is made up almost entirely of cut-and-paste clips from Auckland CCTV and Police interviews which are not acknowledged anywhere. Neither in the movie or in the credits. Credit where credit is due. Some "writers" are named at the end. Which bits did they write? There is not sufficient warning at the beginning to viewers of the content or advice to those who could be affected by the film. "Mature audiences" is not enough Netflix. There is nothing at the end of the film for people deeply affected by viewing it to contact groups who specialise in providing support or other action. It gives the appearance of being screened before being completed. Shameful Netflix. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review Nicholas B Not sure why it's called, "The Lie". The lie that the convicted tells is what leads the police quicker to his further questioning and arrest, even though it's implied at the start that a lie could be the thing that stymies the efforts of police to find missing persons. Furthermore, there's not just one lie but many. Anyway, this is a very dry, dull and thoroughly unimaginitive documentry, that has some questionable angles to its messages. It's also deeply depressing. Check it out! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Jacinta I I can’t stop thinking about it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Kelly D As a woman who has used dating apps, this chilled me to the bone. Cold. Ordinary. Horrible. The use of CCTV footage was masterful in solving the crime and in this documentary. Without giving anything away, the courtroom scenes also chilled me to the bone. Lawyers questioning women like that? Unbelievably cruel. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
