Nick Schager Village Voice Exorcisms, sances, scurrying phantoms, slamming doors, blood rituals, possessed children, upside-down crosses - The Offering leaves few horror devices unused. May 6, 2016 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times [An] uninspired, nonsensical mishmash, which crudely cobbles together second-hand religious imagery, abrasively noisy jump-scares, and - for some reason - techno-phobia. May 5, 2016 Full Review Andy Webster New York Times The result is the cinematic equivalent of combining every paint color on a canvas: a murky mess. May 5, 2016 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film It doesn't outstay its welcome, and for those seeking a straightforward slice of old fashioned horror for an evening's entertainment, it has plenty to offer. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 11, 2018 Full Review Javier Porta Fouz La Nación (Argentina) The only scary thing of the film is the poor and obnoxious visual language of it. Jo & Co Reading some of the reviews of this move, with the large majority giving it a high rating, Jo and I went to watch with higher than normal expectations. Neither of us are gig fans of horror but this movie seemed to have a good plot and lots of scary moments. Plus it took place in a Jewish morgue. Missing children and a jewish young man married to an outsider (non Jewish) who is pregnant. He visits his father who owns the morgue with his brother. The brother does not like the son nor his wife. We see an old Jewish man confronted by an evil figure/spirit at the start of the movie and he stabs himself with a knife and traps the spirit in a ring with a chain on it. This man ends up at the morgue where the young man, who is now working at the morgue pulls the knife out of the body and he sees the ring and inadvertently releases the spirit and the rest of the movie is devoted to lots and lots of shouts, screams, mostly at the pregnant woman. Why she doesn'tt have a miscarriage at the sheer terror she is experiencing is just amazing. But so is the rest of the non stop terror moments all are subjected to. None of which have much story attached but the screen writer and director don't waste their time on any time on story they want to shock you every five minutes. They don't seem to understand that in a horror movie less is more. And the evil spirit monster is absolutely laughable. Jo said at the opening creasy, "Thank goodness that's over!". And even more, it's not a long movie. It got the extra star from me because of that. Positively incomprehensible! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member I wasn't able to finish it. I barely watched 20 minutes because the lead was unbelievably bad. When she was viewing her sister's body in the morgue with little change in her expression, I asked out loud if this was the only face she had. I kept on, but when the "Biblical scholar" said that the book of Genesis was dated to "10th" century BC -- as in the number ten -- I was out of there. I get that screenwriters aren't always theologians, but get your history right. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member superb horror film. I don't know why other reviews are so bad. excellent jumpy horror. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/14/18 Full Review Audience Member disappointing horror where a sister goes in search of results into why her sibling died. but gets drawn Into a more sinister world Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member There's mash-up of a few things done before in horrors in this one, which is mostly a dull affair, but does perk up in its final scenes. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is so bad. Just....so bad..... Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
