What to Know

Critics Consensus

Depressingly dull and all-around poorly made, Rage is the rare Nicolas Cage action thriller lacking enough energy to reach "so bad it's good" territory.

Justin Chang Variety Piles on the foreign accents and paint-by-numbers brutality, all served up with a grim, operatic self-seriousness that gives Cage's antihero little room to maneuver. Jul 14, 2014 Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture Cage may not always be easy on the eyes, but at his best, you can't turn away from him, because you never really know what he'll do next. But here, the actor plays it drab and dour. Jul 11, 2014 Full Review David Hiltbrand Philadelphia Inquirer There isn't an original frame or line of dialogue in Rage. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 11, 2014 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Painstakingly generic, one only wishes it would at least reach the heights of emotion its succinct title promises, yet every turn, and even a forlornly tacky plot twist, play out like some inevitable, flaccid Ferris Wheel of schlock. Rated: 1/5 Aug 30, 2019 Full Review Pat Padua Spectrum Culture Would not have been saved by more of those over-the-top Cage moments, but it would have helped. Rated: 1.75/5 Aug 31, 2018 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews Generally awful and without redeeming qualities... Rated: 1.5/4 Jun 8, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review Justin W I love Nicolas Cage, who doesn't? This movie is not good though. Poorly written, slow, pointless movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/26/23 Full Review Ronald H Laughably bad. Cage's wife is played by a no-talent actress who looks as young as her teenage stepdaughter. The thugs from Cage's criminal past are ludicrous stereotypes. It's clear that Cage, a capable actor, has become entirely indiscriminate about his choice of movie roles. They're just cash grabs for him. I understand his debt problems and the fact that he has to take everything that comes along, but it's still a shame to see him in trash like this--not to mention Peter Stormare and Danny Glover. I sometimes wonder if, when between scenes or after the day's shooting when making a really bad movie, if the actors sit around and laugh, saying, "Man, this film really sucks, but I'll take the paycheck." Or perhaps they try to maintain some kind of pretense that they're doing good work. I suspect the former. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/21/23 Full Review Sean M Very mediocre film and the "twist" at the end was pathetic and basically made the whole movie pointless. The sound is bad too. Low volume during dialogue and then have to turn it down when there's music because it's so loud. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Thoughtful piece, not the slobbering predictable no-acting action movie the professional critics seem to have wanted. Ignore their reviews. Mr. Cage brings solid acting chops to this film. Danny Glover even brings dimension to his supporting role, which cannot always be said. There is a genuine plot with interesting and credible twists. Rachel Nichols fills out wonderfully a rather thin role as Cage's wife, and Peter Stomare is great, always bigger than his role. Cabezas brings it together well. I'm loathe to compare, but there are clear precedents laid down here for the first John Wick story. This narrative is fuller, more cerebral than sensual. Take this film on its own terms. It's a rewarding film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Another average Nicolas Cage film that could of been so much better if it had more action and if it's ending wasn't so lackluster.
