      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Welcome to the Punch is a little deeper and more thoughtful than most police dramas -- but not quite enough to surmount its thinly written characters and numbing violence.

TheVamppir8 Absolutely rubbish like a bad BBC episode of the bill. Cast from z Listers. Plot thinner than my wife's gravy. In the recycling it goes. Best bit of editing was the trailer that got me to waste 2 quid on music magpie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The plot needs some touch of lemon squeeze to give it some sissy to be good action... too much drama... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Jelisije J When a movie relies on its star power to save it from its mediocre plot. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/19/23 Full Review Audience Member There is no saving this film from bad storytelling. McAvoy doesn't have a chance to strong arm this narrative that gives no clear direction on what we want justice for or whose side we're on. Just bikes and explosions and meh. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the worst films I have ever seen. the first time I watched it I fell asleep - I had to watchi it again which was borderline torture. The cast and in Particular mcavoy and strong look almost embarrassed to be in it. What a shame that so fine a cast are left to struglle with the pitiful excuse of a script. Deborah Ross The Spectator As a rule, I love James McAvoy with all my heart, but he just isn't cut out to be a scowling, hardened action hero. Too sweet, too downy, never sufficiently unreconstructed enough. I always want to pet him. Sep 4, 2018 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times "Welcome to the Punch" is derivative, dumb fun. Rated: 3/5 Mar 29, 2013 Full Review Sara Stewart New York Post One straight-faced gunfight after another, signifying nothing. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 29, 2013 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review There’s nothing very wrong about Welcome to the Punch, but there’s also very little about this urban cop yarn that proves to be anything more than serviceable. Rated: 2/4 Sep 6, 2022 Full Review Katie Smith-Wong Flick Feast Tense, beautifully shot and great performances from its male leads, Welcome To The Punch is more than your average British cop film and it's an appreciated addition to the genre.
