Alric t If you're expecting a faithful adaptation of the source material, I'm going to start by letting you down. All the main beats are reinterpreted to a much darker, more realistic story. Scrooge here isn't some emotionally crippled man who lost touch with empathy. In the original story, Scrooge is a man who simply wants to be left alone. Guy Pearce's rendition of the character if far more than that. He's sadistic and repulsive, swimming in an emotional swill that makes him a truly detestable human being. This version of the character makes the others seem downright lovable. As a person very deeply fond of this story, I'll check out nearly any adaptation. In fact, I just finished reading the story just a few days ago, for the fourth time. This adaptation is meanest I've seen, or could have even imagined, though this man seems like a very real character. The drama is very strong here, and the production tries to go beyond the romanticized veil of Dickens' narrative. To be sure, what's left in tact is that Scrooge is eventually redeemed, but it's not the joyous celebration, and not everyone is willing to forgive him. The entire cast is giving it their all, fine performances all around, and the set designs and cinematography is topnotch, having a muted color scheme. Any devotee to this story will enjoy it, for sure. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Bence D Great adaptation of a well known tale. Loved whole vibe this show gives through out all the episodes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/09/24 Full Review Mark P This homage, and I emphasize the word "homage" is nothing short of brilliant. The acting is superb. This version transcends Dickens' story and makes it more relevant and more compelling in our world of the 21st century. It is dystopian, and if you want/need to be uplifted in the traditional sense you will not find it in this movie. But this film is about confronting your past and moving past it. This has replaced my devotion to the 1951 Alistair Sim version. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/28/23 Full Review Elidh D This has become our favorite version of this Christmas classic. Although it says it's based on Dicken's A Christmas Carol, it seems to pull a lot of its plot ideas from the book "Jacob T. Marley". The ending seems more appropriate for a man like Scrooge and more in keeping with the idea of earning redemption. The acting is excellent. Guy Pearce is superb as Scrooge. He fully embraces each step in Scrooge's journey so that one can believe in his reclamation. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review Ben F Fantastic. I watch it every year. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/17/23 Full Review David G Guy Pearce is a talented, reliable actor. But this version of Dickens classic felt soulless, cold and overall brutal. For me, totally off base from the heart of the original story. Don't expect any good holiday feelings here. Only dark, depressing characters. Sorry I wasted my time watching it.
