Mark P This homage, and I emphasize the word "homage" is nothing short of brilliant. The acting is superb. This version transcends Dickens' story and makes it more relevant and more compelling in our world of the 21st century. It is dystopian, and if you want/need to be uplifted in the traditional sense you will not find it in this movie. But this film is about confronting your past and moving past it. This has replaced my devotion to the 1951 Alistair Sim version. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/28/23 Full Review Elidh D This has become our favorite version of this Christmas classic. Although it says it's based on Dicken's A Christmas Carol, it seems to pull a lot of its plot ideas from the book "Jacob T. Marley". The ending seems more appropriate for a man like Scrooge and more in keeping with the idea of earning redemption. The acting is excellent. Guy Pearce is superb as Scrooge. He fully embraces each step in Scrooge's journey so that one can believe in his reclamation. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review Ben F Fantastic. I watch it every year. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/17/23 Full Review David G Guy Pearce is a talented, reliable actor. But this version of Dickens classic felt soulless, cold and overall brutal. For me, totally off base from the heart of the original story. Don't expect any good holiday feelings here. Only dark, depressing characters. Sorry I wasted my time watching it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/13/24 Full Review Alec B FX's "A Christmas Carol" offers the most sinister approach to retelling Dickins' 1843 novel. Keeping the plot and Victorian setting, this version dives deep into Scrooge's darkness --- and the lowest points of human capacity. Stunning performances are sometimes lost to the all-to-long run-time of this TV special, though fans of horror and literature will still find some thrills and excitement. At times necessarily edgy, the sentiment and messaging remain true. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/19/22 Full Review Tommy G This version of Dickens classic tale of redemption is truly a masterpiece. There are some who say that Dickens would find this treatment appalling, and I think he would, only for its raw honesty being too horrific for the public in his time, not ours. The themes explored in this tale are just a deeper dive into what we know and love about A Christmas Carol. Deeper into the abuse and scarring suffered by Scrooge, deeper into the miserly duo of Scrooge and Marley cutting corners and greasing palms in the name of profit and at the expense of humanity. All things that were commonplace in the 1840's. A time when life was cheap to those with means, and life was short to those without. Capturing a wonderful, albeit macabre, and raw Christmas tale, I believe this version projects what truly inspired Dickens, and what he had to leave out. The raw details that were implied with the 3 spirits are finally brought to the forefront. Showing just how rich Christmas can be for those with so little.
