Pretentious 7-year-old Allen Gregory De Longpre (Jonah Hill) doesn't see himself as a child but as an intelligent and worldly young man. He lives in a loft -- with his father, Richard, Richard's partner Jeremy, and his adopted Cambodian sister, Julie -- where his father has home-schooled him. But now, Allen Gregory must leave the nest to attend elementary school and deal with the challenges of relating to kids his own age and teachers who don't understand that he is more than the child he appears to be.

Critics Consensus

Despite the show's intriguing premise, Allen Gregory's title character is too unlikable to generate consistent laughs.

Ken Tucker Entertainment Weekly I doubt that Allen Gregory is going to be much of a hit, simply because the character is so aggressively cold and odd. Oct 30, 2011 Full Review Robert Bianco USA Today Gross, ugly, vicious and stupid - Allen is all of that, to be sure. But funny? Too rarely to matter. Oct 30, 2011 Full Review Mike Lechevallier Slant Magazine It's perplexing how the writers came to the conclusion that any of this would be funny. Rated: 1/4 Oct 30, 2011 Full Review Randy Dankievitch Processed Media In all reality, it might be the least funny animated show I've ever seen. Feb 24, 2020 Full Review Jessica Johnson Time Out Chicago Allen Gregory is a character in desperate need of a foil and most of the first episode is spent showing us just how insanely quirky and weird he is, without allowing any of the other characters to be fleshed out. Jul 2, 2018 Full Review Robert Canning IGN Movies The main character is incredibly unlikable, as are the supporting characters. Rated: 6/10 Oct 30, 2011 Full Review Read all reviews

Bob B So terrible I forgot it existed until I watched a video about terrible FOX shows. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Is there a way to give this show negative stars? I know that line is a cliché, but Allen Gregory is by far the greatest heap of unfunny, unoriginal, and painful to the human senses bile that has ever been craped out of an animation studio in the history of mankind. I remember a cartoon featuring a super hero version of MC Hammer and it lasted 3 episodes before being cancelled. I saw two of those episodes as a small child and they are one of my earliest childhood memories. That show that lasted only 3 episodes was far better of a show than this heap and watching hammerman is like being stabbed repeatedly in the eyes. I now use "Allen Gregory's" as a replacement for "Stars" when rating how bad a show is. They are my negative stars. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Unlikable Characters, No Good Jokes, And This is a Offensive gay show Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Probably the worst animated show to ever air on television. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Blatantly homophobic, short on likable characters and never funny, Allen Gregory gives adult cartoons a bad name.
